Parenting after 35

12 month stats and 2% milk

Caroline had her 12  month check-up yesterday.

Height- 29.75 in (75%)

Weight- 21lb 6 oz (60%)

She has dropped down a lot from the 95% she was in when she was a newborn but that is normal.  She did not enjoy the shots at all and kept waking up all night to remind me of her displeasure.

Her pedi said that the new thinking is that 2% milk is OK for kids who aren't low weight. I have never heard or read that anywhere else. I'm keeping her on whole milk. She doesn't eat much  as it is.

ET: correct "are low weight" to "aren't low weight."

  • Plus whole milk is way more delicious.  :)

Yay Caroline, she's bigger than wee Margaux!

  • yeah we're sticking with whole, too. two more weeks and we'll be on it solely. can't wait.

is Caroline only drinking whole milk?

(my pedi said to make sure Sabrina's hungry- that she eat nothing for a couple of hours when you sit her down to eat... and since then, the girl EATS!)

Yeah. She never really took to straight formula and made the switch to cow's milk pretty easily.

Well, actually I'm still nursing too (only one of us wants to quit and it's not Caroline) so she isn't only drinking whole milk buyt she isn't taking any formula.

Sounds like a good visit. I have never heard that either, but then M can't have dairy so I haven't kept up on all the new stuff...

  • Last I heard the pediatricians recommend whole milk until age 2 and then you can switch to 2% if you want. Whole milk has the fat necessary for brain development and personally I prefer a chubby toddler than risk that his brain not develop properly!
Me: 44 DH: 42. DS born healthy at 40 weeks 8/24/09. TTC since then with no luck or ART. Surprise BFP 8/6/14... MMC @ 8 weeks 4 days... Miss you everyday sweet baby angel.
  • I would stick with the whole milk. I think they can switch to 2% at the age of 2. My pedi said they need the fat in the whole milk for developement. Sounds like a great appt. minus the shots!

  • our pedi had us switch Griffin and Gibby to 2% shortly after switching to cow's milk when they were 12mo... both were in the 90th+ percentile, no need for that added fat b/c they are good eaters.

Gray is lower weight and not a great eater- so we keep him on whole milk.

We will switch Gibby to 1% when he's 2y/o (pedi recommended) as we did with Griffin, too.
