PSA: had car seat inspection today...

The inspector guy said NOT to use a bundle me (the cozy bags) and NOT to use one of those infant head supporter things (only what comes with the seat).  He said that there should be nothing squishy/cozy between your baby and the car seat.

I was not surprised about the bundle me, but I was surprised about the head supporter.  He said that it's better to roll up a receiving blanket and put it around their head in the same manner, but with nothing behind their head.

Also, they can't go in their car seats with any kind of poofy/fluffy warm clothes. They should be dressed normally.

So...our super comfy looking car seat will go back to normal :(  I love the coziness, but I'd rather be safe.

If anybody gets different info, I'd be interested to hear it!  I know and see sooo many people using both of the items I was told not to.  I don't know if they didn't have their seats inspected, got different info, or just said screw it and used them anyways?

Re: PSA: had car seat inspection today...

  • We brought our daughter home from the NICU today and they told us all of the same things. The showed us how to roll up receiving blankets b/c she is so small. So basically I'm just telling you we got the same information you got, I was surprised about the head rest as well.

They did however want us to have one of the covers to put over top when we went outside.  Which is basically a bundle me i guess, ours is a hand made one so it's not as thick as the Bundle me's

  • If you want something warm to cover baby that stays attatched to the carseat, check out Snuggle Mez. They sell some at BBB, but they don'tgo under the straps or touch the baby at all, just make it a little warmer and can cover the seat and baby completely when you step outside:

  • We were told the same things at our childbirth class by the installation people (did a presentation and a giveaway at our class).

We were also told not to use the mirrors that you can check on baby in.

We got a light fleece suit for use with the car seat - it's thin enough not to be much extra but still warm enough for baby in the cold WNY winter. And our car seat model (we both have the same one) came with its own head support. We haven't taken it out, because it came with the car seat. We'll see what they say about it when I go for my installation appointment Thursday.

  • Why not? I am just curious as to why no head support? Beyond that of a rolled up blanket.

  • Unfortunately, they didn't cover these things in our infant care or birthing classes.

The head support thing is because most, ours included, have a slight little pillow-y part behind the head.  It didn't ONLY go around the head like a rolled up blanket would.  He said nothing should be behind the head.

  • They say nothing should be between baby and car seat except their layer of clothing (NOT thick coats, etc). It made sense when explained to me, but I wouldn't have thought of it otherwise.

  • Everything posted makes sense to me so far, except the mirrors. Why no mirrors?
  • It's an extra object that can impact baby in the event of an accident. So no mirrors, etc, that could potentially fall on them.

My sheriff's office thinks they're unsafe because they could cause a parent to become preoccupied on the road as well.

  • At our infant lifesaver class our instructor said very similar things.  Baby shouldn't be in any heavy clothing and nothing should be put behind baby in order to make them fit better.  receving blankets can be put on either side of baby or between their crotch and the buckle to make them fit but nothing between baby and the back of the carseat.
