Did your pedi prescribe vitamin/iron supplements simply because you EBF? DD had her 1 month check up today and her pedi said it's standard because breastfed babies don't get enough vit D, iron in breastmilk. She's doing super - gained 3lbs and grown 1 and 1/2" since her first checkup (2 and 1/2lb from birth weight). Just wondering if you all were giving vitamins daily to your infants as well. No one ever mentioned the need for this while i was pregnant - just how breast milk was best and all baby will need until it's time for solids. TIA for your experiences.
Re: vitamin/iron supplements
Mine did, we use Enfamil TriViSol. I too was surprised by this because I hadn't heard of this in any of my reading while pregnant. Thankfully DD likes the liquid vitamin so it isn't a big deal. In fact, it helped when it came time for her Rotovirus vaccine because that is a liquid they squirt in the mouth and she was used getting her vitamins so she swallowed it with problem.
I just read an article today about babies who are EBF for the first six months being at risk for iron deficiency anemia. The article wasn't against EBF, just how you should introduce solids before six months. I just talked with our pedi about starting cereal in the next week or so.
My pedi just recommended a vit D supplement. I would suggest the Baby D Drops (you can get them at Whole Foods), it's just one drop a day on your nipple or paci.
My pedi says most babies are fine without an iron supplement until 6 months. This is when they recommend rice cereal which is iron fortified.
This exactly, We've just been doing the vit D & are starting cereal now
