3rd Trimester

How were you told to do kick counts?

It seems almost every one I talk to was given a different number or amount of time in which you should get X amount of kicks. Just wondering what you all were told.

Re: How were you told to do kick counts?

  • My Drs have never mentioned kick counts, for either of my pregnancies. But from what I hear, the general is 10 kicks in 2 hours.

  • 10 movements within 2 hours.

ETA: I do not do kick counts though. As long as I feel him moving I am good with that.

  • I do them everyday and my doctor said 10 movements in 2 hours.

  • I don't think doing routine kick counts everyday is necessary.  I do find them to be reassuring though if your baby is having a slower day than normal.

10 movements in 2 hours is the most common kick count criteria that I hear.  But I think the most important thing is for the mother to be tuned in to her baby's movements and get checked out if there's a noticeable decrease.  I think that is more important than any specific number.

  • Pick a time of day that baby is usually active. Count for 10 movements within 2 hours.

  • My OB's office gave me a print out. It suggested that I try to count 4 movements within 30 minutes time 3 times a day or 10 movements withing 6 hours.  Sounds kind of different for everyone.

I don't count them daily, usually she's active enough that there's absolutely no need but if we're having a slow day, I get them in just to be sure she's good in there.

I think was most PP's have said though, if you're in tune with their normal activity, being particular about the counts is a little unnecessary. Whenever I mention that LO has her slow days at the OB she just says, well that's normal but be sure to get your counts in on those days and it's fine.

  • My doctor said just to note anything that is not normal for you and your baby.  Normal may be different for everyone.

  • Just called DR yesterday because I had noticed a sudden, dramatic decrease in DS's movement. I was told 10 movements in 2 hours. After 6 days of barely feeling him, he is back and moving as much as ever.
  • My OB just told me to call them if there is a change in her amount of movements.
  • My doctor only said to do it if you were noticing a decrease in movement.

Drink some water or juice, lay on left side, and get to 10 kicks in 2 hours

  • I've never done kick counts with any pregnancy and never been told to do them.  My MWs just ask how often I'm feeling movement and to call them if anything changes.

Ditto.  Mine is so active that I think I would notice if he quit moving.

  • Funny story,... I got curious when LO first starting moving because he got really active after breakfast. I had the kick count beta backwards and counted kicks for 10 minutes..... and got 22 kicks. Same the next day. I laughed pretty hard when I found out the metric was 10 kicks in 2 hours. Since then I've stopped counting, but it's been proof that we have a little energizer bunny baking right now.

Like a pp mentioned, I find food intake and position (sitting vs. standing) make a huge difference to how active he is.

  • I have a anterior placenta and have a hard time getting accurate kick counts.  After being monitored twice by my OB and in L&D I was told to just monitor the activity I could feel over the course of several hours and call if it felt less than usual.  I feel very few kicks but I do feel her rolling around or shoving stuff and I consider that part of the "movement counts."

  • It's never been mentioned to me either.  I just make sure that she moves at her "regular times".  If she isn't doing anything I wake her up to be sure all is well.  (Sorry baby!)

  • My doc has never mentioned it before either. He just asks if the baby is moving like usual.
