tide free 'n clear vs dreft- who wins?

so i had my shower this past weekend and it really has kicked me into baby mode overdrive.  last night i went to target and picked up two containers (powder) of tide free 'n clear so that i can wash clothes, sheets, etc. this weekend.  i chose tide for two reasons....one, it's cheaper than dreft and two, i figured i can use it on our clothing, too.  my question is, which one did you choose and why?  im guessing they're essentially the same thing?  and maybe, just maybe, there is a cheaper alternative to both out there that someone can share with me!

  • Not sure about the price difference, but I hear great things about All Small and Mighty, Free and Clear

  • I don't use either I use an organic detergent that doesn't leave anything in your clothes.  Even the tide free n clear leaves residue, it's really kind of gross when you rinse out a "clean" piece of clothing in a bowl of water and you see it turn slightly milky that's the leftover detergent that didn't come out of the clothes.

  • I bought Tide Free n Clear because it was cheaper, even though I had a coupon for Dreft.  I'll use that until it's gone, and hopefully by that time I'll know if it works for LO or if she has skin sensitivities.  I would definitely give All a shot if she doesn't end up having sensitive skin!  All is usually cheaper in general, although I haven't seen the free and clear version at my Target.

  • Tide makes my skin break out in a rash, so we use All Free and Clear and just plan on using that for baby stuff too.

  • I normally use T.f.c. & have found Dreft to be to pungent, so now I do 3/4 Tide & 1/4 Dreft, which also helps stretch the $ out.
  • Both DH and I have sensitive skin, so we alternate between the free & clear Arm & Hammer detergent and All Free Clear detergent. Both are cheaper still than Tide and we've never had issues with allergies, rashes or itchiness. We plan on doing the same for our little one unless proven otherwise.
  • I use Tide free and clear. Since I don't have an outside baby I can't tell you if there are any problems with it. I have only cleaned new clothes with it, although I did wash a white blanket from babies r us that got much whiter after I washed it.

When it's gone I'll see if the baby still needs a special detergent, otherwise we will all just use the same one.

  • I have extremely sensitive skin and I use Tide Free & Clear.  I'm going to continue using that unless it becomes a problem for LO.  I did buy some Dreft spot cleaner the other day because it was on sale.  I haven't used it yet though.

  • I am happy to see you posted this question. I was just thinking the same thing. My H work clothes have to be washed in basic liquid Tide (they are fire resistant). I really hate to have a ton of different detergents around and thought liquid Tide F&C would be a better option around our house. I currently use Downey softner on our laundery (except H work clothes) but think I need to stop with thatwith baby almost here. Someone mentioned white vinegar. Do you use that in the wash water or in the softnenr dispenser? Do you get a vinegar smell using that?

No vinegar smell whatsoever! I just normally put it in with the detergent...some people put it in during the rinse cycle.

  • I've been using purex so far and I like it. If baby has a problem I will try something else.

  • I use All Free Clear and really like it.

  • We Use the Sun All natural. It has no dyes or fragrances like the other only it's a tiny fraction of the cost. We got one of the huge bottles with the push button for only $6.00. We started using it for all of our clothes.
  • I like All Baby

  • tide tide tide.  I use Tide Free and Clear on all our laundry, from baby crap, our clothes, my husband's machinist work clothes, cloth diapers.  Dreft reeks and is full of perfumes, dyes and additives.  It's actually one of the nastier detergents to use for new babies.
  • I'm going with Tide Free and Clear.  I can't stand the smell of dreft plus I figure Tide is what we'll use for our own clothes.  As I've run out of laundry detergent I've been replacing my regular stuff with dye/perfume free.

  • I originally planned to use Dreft, but my mommy friends all said it's not worth the price, and that I should use Tide Free & Clear or All Free & Clear.  I like All, so I went with that.  Besides, I'm going to use cloth diapers, and Dreft isn't on the list of CD safe detergents, and both Tide and All Free & Clear are.

  • I have super sensitive skin so I already use Dreft for my own clothing.  We buy in bulk at Costco to save some $$$.

  • Since I myself have extremely sensitive skin, I use All Free & Clear (no dyes or fragrances), Downy liquid & dryer sheets (no dyes or fragrances) for myself & my husband. Since these are the only detergent & fabric softener my skin can tolerate, I have opted to use the same for all of the baby items as well. To me it made no sense to buy a separate detergent for her that will do the same thing that the one I already have & use does.
