Question about CIO...

I know, I know... the 1 millionth question about CIO.

I'm not really into CIO, but DH is ready to give it a shot and I don't have a problem trying it at this point. Here's my question though... how do we CIO when DD stands up? She basically nurses or has a bottle and then is rocked to sleep. And then when we lay her down in the crib she wakes up and starts hollering a good 70% of the time lately. And then within like... 45 seconds she's standing up. If I try to lay her down she just hollers more. ALSO, she has never once stopped crying once she get's going. She has woken up a little at night, made some noise, and then put herself back to sleep. But she has NEVER done anything but escalate when we've tried drowsy-but-awake and the seahorse and all that jazz. So I don't know if we're even good CIO candidates....

Re: Question about CIO...

  • Let her stand up and cry.  Seriously.  When she gets tired, she'll sit down.  Then She'll lie down.

How long have you let her cry at a time?

Honestly, pretty much not at all. She is LOUD and so far I just haven't had the strength. But DH is over bedsharing, and I said I'd give it a shot.

  • She will lay down when she gets tired. I will say if you are going to do CIO you have to commit to it, be consistent, and be prepared for some crying.

  • I didn't do CIO, but when first starting "drowsy but awake"  it literally took dozens of times before he would give up and go to sleep.  It was hard...probably harder than CIO but totally worth it.  Now I can just put him in his crib awake and walk away - no protest whatsoever.

Ditto this.  Stick to your guns.  DD did the escalating thing when we did CIO.  Over the course of about 10 minutes, she'd get progressively more and more angry, and the crying would get more and more hysterical, and then she'd just stop and fall asleep.

I would recommend the book SleepEasy Solution. It's a modified form of CIO. In the book it talks about babies reaching milestones and says that you shouldn't expect them to sleep as well for about 2 weeks (I think that's how long it was) or until the new activity loses some of its luster.

The book also has a chapter about weaning from night feedings instead of cutting them out cold turkey. I found that very helpful.

  • also...you might be surprised and it could go better then you expect.  i tried letting LO cry at naps and she was VERY persistent and would never go down on her own.  so i stopped trying.  recently we started sleep training at bedtime and the first night it only took her 20 mins to go to sleep, the next night less then 5, and no crying ever since.  i mean....a little in the middle of the night, but none at bedtime or naptime.  so....i know what it's like to have a persistent crier...but you won't know until you try.  might not be as hard as you think.

  • I'm very curious to know how this works for your DD if you decide to sleep train. DS has gone through all sorts of sleep phases since the 4 month wakeful. He also has a very persistent personality and escalates. We haven't tried CIO b/c I'm not even sure if it would work with his personality. I'm also not 100% sure of letting him CIO teaches him to sleep.

  • Wow, this was my question on Monday and now that I am 5 days into CIO with some modification it is working!  My DS stands since 5 months and screams so loudy it is crazy.  The first night he went for 30min then I went in and he went again for 20 min.  ONly then did he finally sit down and start winding down.  We started sleep training our 8 month old now 5 days ago and there is a little at the end of the tunnel.

Stick to it and have a glass of wine.  She will sit down and I totally never thought my boy would.
