I've been looking online for baby furniture to fill the room (crib, changer, dresser etc) and noticed I'd be spending about $1000 for something decent, which could change into a toddler bed. I bought my parents house and they left all the furniture.
I'm 26 years old and they still have the crib that I used, do you think it would be safe to use this? Or should we just buy a new one. I thought for my nursery it would be neat to have all antique furniture and quilt fabrics. And spend money on a really nice stroller. They also have the high chair that I used. Are there
huge benefits to buying new? We can definitely afford new, but just like the idea of old
Re: Baby furniture new vs. old
The thing I would be very careful about is checking to make sure that crib hasn't been re-called. There seems to have been a lot of re-called cribs out there. I honestly can't remember where you would look for that info though. Does it still have instructions and the model info with it?
I have heard conflicting info regarding using used cribs - I was told by a lot of people to buy a new crib unless you know it is not re-called and it is not damaged and missing any parts.
I think that used furniture/baby stuff is great in general, but there are two things I'd want new - the crib and carseat. I can guarantee if you call the manufacturer about the crib, they would advise you not to use it. In fact the crib we were going to use as a spare (at my parents' or ILs) turned out to be 16 years old when I called the manufacturer (Simmons) and they told us to dispose of it as it does not meet any of the current safety standards.
So I'd go with a new crib. There's no need to replace the rest of the furniture, though. DS' glider, dresser, and changing table were all secondhand. You can likely find something similar in style to the rest of the antique nursery furniture... BRU and Buy Buy Baby have tons of cribs.
