Trouble TTC

IUI...Yey or Ney?

Question just taking a little poll here because I have not done IUI yet.

Facts: I have PCOS using Menopur/Bravelle. I have a couple growing follies.

DH: Sperm analysis was through the roof, No problems there.

One doctor said well when we get you going we will have you guys have sex and do it naturally for free. The second doctor I saw (The first was out of town) said we should go ahead and do IUI when it's time. Now if you had to choose what would you do? We have no insurance coverage at all, this is all OOP. The only thing holding me back is thinking if it does not work "naturally" then we have to do all this crap all over again...more medicine, shots, and money....Decisions Decisons!

Re: IUI...Yey or Ney?

  • Have you had an HSG to check your tubes?

IMO: If your have no tube problems, you KNOW your going to O, and your DH has no issues, I'd BD at home. but that is just IMO.

  • Our situation is a little different, since we have unexplained IF and I already know that doing it "naturally" doesn't work for us, even with regular ovulation and a normal SA. But if you are already paying for injectable meds, I would do the IUI. If you are already getting monitoring with US, the IUI should only be a few hundred dollars more (I know, *only*). But if you are already paying OOP for meds, I'd do whatever it took to increase the odds. An injectable+IUI cycle at my RE runs about $1000 (that doesn't include meds though, just monitoring, sperm wash and the IUI). Clomid+IUI is $750.

That being said, if IUI would be a lot more, I'd probably give TI one or two tries just to see if it works. IUI doesn't have much better odds than TI, depending on what statistics you look at. I never believe statistics though...  I don't know that that helps you at all. That's just the way I would think about it.

Good luck with whatever you choose!

  • IMO it depends how much money you're willing to put out.  If you choose the IUI route, there is no reason you can't try to conceive naturally and give yourself the extra help with the IUI during the same cycle.  On the other hand, there is no definite that the IUI will work on the first try, so you can just save that procedure for when you are emotionally/monetarily ready... • IUI hands down.  The IUI itself is so simple (think pap smear) and the IUI itself only costs about $350ish (I don't know if this includes the sperm wash or not for us, which I think is another $125 or so) so it's not like you are talking about being OOP for IVF.  Since you are already doing the meds, I'd want to give myself the best chance possible,  Especially if everything is OOP, you want to cycle as few times as you can.

  • We have unexplained (no dx for me and SA is normal). We are doing Clomid + IUI, but we have insurance coverage for it. If I was OOP for everything, I think I would try one TI at home before doing the IUI.

If you were doing oral meds only (femara/clomid) I would say just have sex and hope for the best.  Since you are already investing in injectable meds and the cost of monitoring, I would pay a bit more and get the IUI.  It doesn't increase your odds a lot, but it will get you the most bang for your buck (hehehe). That's just my 2 cents. I think whatever you decide there are pros and cons though, so just go with your gut.

LMFAO! "Bang for my buck" That made my day! Thanks!
