Ear tubes and adenoids removed?

My daughter has had ear infection after ear infection and they are finally referring us to a specialist. A lot of moms have said "have her adenoids removed too. they did this for my child and they hardly get sick now or have problems". My question is, for those of your children that have tubes, how many of you also had their adenoids removed? Was this something that was recommended by the doctor or something you requested? Any information you can provide would be extremely helpful.

Thank you!!

Re: Ear tubes and adenoids removed?

  • My DS didn't have adenoid issues.  He was not a mouth breather, didn't snore....there were other questions I answered during a screening.  We only had tubes put in.

I don't think a dr will let you remove adenoids just to do it.  I wouldn't get more surgery done than necessary.

  • DS had his adenoids and not tubes.  He had major issues with drainage and coughing for about 6 months.   He does still get sick.  In fact he is sick right now and was sick the week after surgery.  He got it done last month.

  • There is a camera they can use to see how big the adnoids are. If the adnoids are too large they could be blocking the eustation tube. This is the tube that allow for drainage from the ear to the back of the throat.

They won't remove them unless necessary. Tubes are pretty minor procedure. It is like cutting a layer of skin and putting a tube in your sking. Adnoids are more like tonsils and have more risk with the procedure.

  • DS got tubes about 10 months ago - no ear infections since.  The ENT said he only takes adenoids if it's necessary.

  • Just after his 2nd birthday, my DS1 had his misaligned eye corrected, tubes placed, adenoids and tonsils out.  I really don't know what made the big difference, but he was much healthier after that.  He went into surgery knowing they'd do the eat tubes, but the can't see the adenoids until in surgery, and for my LO, the tonsils were a last minute consideration, also confirmed in surgery.  From what I read, and I'm sorry i can't remember the details, I recommend highly considering the adenoids as well.
