VBAC

If you were induced with your VBAC...

can you please share your story?

I have my 39 week appt on Tuesday with the most pro-VBAC doctor in the practice, and I'd like to have options to talk about should I not go on my own.

Re: If you were induced with your VBAC...

  • This is not what you asked, but here is what I know.

My OB will not induce for VBACs. She wants our bodies to do it on their own. She does not like augmenting labor with Pit for a VBAC, because of the more "severe" contractions.

That said, mine will let me go to 42 weeks. I am thinking if I get to 41, they will schedule a section for 42, and we will pray I don't make it that long.

And I will pray I don't make it that long anyways....

    :)

  • I wasn't induced but I was scheduled to be induced on Monday.  My Dr would only break my water since I was 3-4 cm.  They would not use pitocin to start the induction but if I had stalled they may use a little pitocin.
  • I went into labor on my own but it was progressing very slowly. First they had me walk around a bunch, then we tried an enema, more walking, tried breaking my waters, more walking, and finally using pitocin. I was in labor for a day and a half, but I got my VBAC.

I thought that being induced would be the beginning of the end, but I ended up getting my VBAC anyway :)

Thank you for the link to your birth story, and congratulations on your VBAC which you worked very hard for!  One question - did you  have any progress at all when they started the Foley catheters?

  • I haven't been induced, but I would go to 42 weeks before I'd consent to it in any case. Also, I don't know if anyone is still using Cervidil or Cytotec for VBACs, but I would avoid those at all costs. They are associated with uterine hyperstimulation and increased risk of rupture. I would probably try a Pitocin only induction (if natural methods failed) in a hospital setting.
  • I was induced with pit from start to finish.  It is NOT contra-indicated for a VBAC, they just can't give you as high a dose as they would with a "regular" labor.  I went to 41 weeks and then my only options were a repeat C/S or to be induced because the hospital would not allow a VBAC to go beyond 41 weeks.  (The other hospital in the area only allowed you to go to 39).

Induction started at 8 am on a Tuesday and I successfully delivered DD at 1:56 am on Wednesday morning.  I had to be on the monitors the entire time due to the induction.

It was exhausting but SO worth it:-)  I left the hospital the next day and felt great.  Also, my midwife let DH help "catch" DD, so it was a totally different experience.

No, I hadn't had any progress at all yet.  That's why I needed to have two different Foleys.  The first was to dilate me to 2 cm, and the second was to get me to around 4cm.

  • There is a gal who tried a foley induction.  It didn't seem to work while it was in (it caused contractions but at the point where the foley wouldn't stay in any longer her contractions stopped), but she did end up going into labor overnight w/o any further help.

I talked to an OB about induction w/ a foley and she said they'd start the foley the previous night, and then the next morning add in pit if needed.

  • I was induced for my VBAC attempt in September.  I had a foley cath inserted at 5pm on Wednesday night.  I was not quite 1 cm when it was inserted.  I had been having very strong contractions for several weeks with no progress.  I was told that it could take 8 to 10 hours for it to fall out and that hopefully when it did I would be 2 or 3 cms.  The foley fell out around 11pm and I was 5 cm.  They started pit to regulate my contractions around midnight. By 3 am I was 7 cm.  DS' heartrate went nuts around 4am. Turns out the cord was wrapped around his body and neck pretty tight. I eventually had a c/s because of the heart decels.  After my c/s, my OB told me that the cord and the decels were the entire reason for the c/s and that my TOL or the induction didn't have anything to do with the need for the c/s.
