I created a toothbrushing monster

Matt is a pretty good brusher - we brush his teeth every night and for the most part he doesn't fuss.

Well recently he has been very interested in our electric toothbrushes.  He stands next to us and puts his finger sideways across his lips and says "brrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr."  I checked at target and they have electric toothbrushes.  I got him a Dora the Explorer one.

Well it was a big hit with Matt. He put it up against his teeth and had a blast. Except when it was time to put the brush away. TOTAL meltdown.  He cried and screamed and pointed to the drawer with the toothbrush and made the toothbrush motion with his finger.  Not the calm, quiet state I want him in before putting him to bed.

This morning when he got up and I brushed my teeth I gave him his toothbrush and we brushed together.  Repeat meltdown when the toothbrush was taken away.

I would let him brush until the battery wore out but I am afraid he could damage his gums.  We have limited it to a minute each time.

  • Trade ya... I can't pick up the toothbrush without C having a complete meltdown.  He HATES it with a fiery passion, so now I just get sneaky with it.

Can you use the electric one at a different time of day and use a regular one at night?

  • That is awesome! We haven't given M an electric toothbrush yet, but he's good about letting us brush his teeth and is pretty keen to try to brush them himself. Gives me hope for the future :)
  • Fletch has the sesame street electric one and loves it too! Not quite as much though, no meltdowns. Maybe it's a small phase since it's so new and he'll be on to the next exciting thing.

    I hope so!

  • Amy, want to fly to NJ and teach Aaron how to brush?

We TRY and he barely lets us get in a few swipes with the toothbrush. *sigh*

  • I can relate to him! I have serious OCD issues about brushing my teeth (i carry an electric toothbrush in my purse and brush a few times during the day at work, in restaurants, etc). I am a big girl and no longer have melt downs, but I think if someone took my toothbrush outta my purse, I would not be able to function!!! LOL!
  • My daughter has a meltdown when we take her regular manual toothbrush away!  We brush her teeth first, but then she always wants to hold the toothbrush.  When it's time to put the brush away, she gets SO upset.  I have to quickly find something to distract her.

I've thought about getting her an electric toothbrush so that she could be like mom and dad, but after reading this I'm wondering if that might be cause for an even greater meltdown!
