Trouble TTC

Femara Questions

Hello ladies!

I typically post in TTGP, and I've posted these questions there, too, but I thought you all might have some better answer for me regarding Femara.

I'm getting ready to start my first round of Femara and had a couple of questions for those of you that are taking or have taken it:

1. What time of day did you take it? Does it matter when you take it?

2. Did you notice a change in your BBT pattern?

3. What s/e did you have (if any)? I heard I might want to drink more Green Tea, because Clomid and Femara have a tendency to dry you up (they are estrogen blockrs, after all!).

 TIA!

Re: Femara Questions

  • I haven't taken Femara (yet!), but it does not act the same way as Clomid which acts by inhibiting the action of estrogen on the pituitary. Femara is an aromatase inhibitor- and blocks the production of estrogen. They go about inducing ovulation in different ways. Femara has been shown to cause fewer side effects such as thinning your uterine lining, or the CM side effects commonly found with Clomid use. It also seems that there is less likelihood of twins and OHSS with Femara.

I found a great study that seemed to show that Femara may be a better option for women with PCOS who don't respond to Clomid, but I can't find it. I will post it later.

Just wanted to clear that up- and as you can see- I am hopeful that my RE will let me try the Femara  before we move onto the more expensive/painful treatments.

  • :::::Waves Hi:::::

I have taken Femara for four cycles. I take it at night or late in the evening. I do sometimes get hot flashes or night sweats, but they are not too bad. I don't think it matters when you take it. I just don't like the possibility of having hot flashes at work.

I haven't noticed a change in my temps since taking Femara. However, if you have to trigger, the shot may alter your temps a bit. It has changed my post O temps a little.

I haven't had any other side effects besides the ones I already mentioned. I have used EPO and Mucinex to help out with CM. I have hostile CM according to our post coital test. So my doctor encouraged me to use Mucinex to help out with that. The EPO gives me headaches. I am not sure if Femara has really changed my CM or not.

What dose are you taking? Good luck?

  • I took Femara for 3 cycles. I took it before bed. The time doesn't matter as long as you're consistent. My temps didn't really change on it (it was my June, July & October cycles if you want to check my charts). I didn't have any side effects or issues with decreased CM.

  • ::big waves back to brandy::  Hey, girl!!

Thank you ladies for all your responses. It sounds like I had a good plan to go ahead and take it at night before bed. I'll continue to drink green tea as I have before from CD1-O to help CM, but won't worry about drinking anything extra or taking any extra "supplements" at this point in time. I'm thankful to hear that Femara typically has much less s/e than Clomid. I'm also taking the lowest does (2.5mg), so I suspect s/e will be minimal. I appreciate y'alls input! :o)

  • Clomid was the devil for me.  Femara has been excellent (except I cry at everything).  This is my third cycle on it and I'm feeling very good about this cycle.

Femara has produced less follicles for me, but they're bigger and my lining has improved on it.

Oh, the other thing about Femara, at least for me, I seem to have developed the acne I never had as a teenager.  My face is horrible right now.

I have not noticed a change in my temps between Clomid and Femara.
