Anyone drive a Mazda 5?

DH and I are looking at buying a new/newer car before the twins arrive.  We've been looking at minivans, but DH went to a Mazda dealership today to check out the Mazda 5, since it seems like a small minivan.  Does anyone with twins drive one, and if so, how's it working for you?  My biggest concern is space.  Our favorite summer activity is to go to the beach (living in FL it's pretty much an every weekend thing) and I worry about having enough space for baby gear plus beach gear.  We'll also probably travel out of state some to visit my family, so packing space is also an issue.  I do like how the Mazda 5 gets better gas mileage than most minivans, and has the sliding doors.  Any thoughts would be appreciated!

  • My friend has one and it is so small. She has said many times she wishes they would have gotten a bigger van. My stroller doesn't fit in it if the back seat it up. If you aren't planning on having any more kids or have anyone else in the car it might work. It doesn't have the power sliding doors which is one of best things when your hands are full. I would get the bigger van they are about the same price and you get way more of a van.

  • we looked at the mazda 5 before buying the Honday Odyssey. IMO the third row seat was a joke, only small children in booster seats could actually use it. Also the lack of the power doors was a major negative.

For us the Odyssey works great, even though it was more expensive.

  • Hey, I was just lurking over here for fun and saw your post.  I do drive a Mazda5.  We just got it a year ago before my daughter was born, knowing it was lacking in space and also knowing we would have more kids.

I really love it.  It gets great gas mileage and it drives so nicely.  It doesn't feel big at all.  However, you will sacrifice space if you get a Mazda5.  My 8 year old can sit in the back seat.  She is very tall for her age and she fits, but it can get cramped with the car seat in front of her.  Without it, though, you can move the middle seat up to make more space in the back.  I can fit my stroller with one of the back seats down, but not with both rear seats up.  I have a smaller stroller that does fit.  You have lots of space with both rear seats down.  We like to go to the beach every year too, and we plan on getting the rails for the top of the car, and just putting stuff up there instead of in the trunk.  I think the Odyssey and the Sienna are great vans, but they are much bigger, much more expensive, and have worse gas mileage.  We were able to pay cash for our brand new Mazda5.  Mazda5 is supposed to be pretty affordable to maintain as well. Had we gotten the Odyssey or Sienna, we would have had to get a used car.

So, yes, you will sacrifice some space, but you get a lot for the price.  It's a great car.  Plenty of kick for a 4 cylinder too.  We are very happy with it.

  • We have a Mazda 5, purchased with the intention of having 2 kids max.   We ended up with twins the second time around and it's tight, but even with a big dog we make it work.  The twins go in the 2nd row, and our toddler goes in the third row.   Flip the second 3rd row seat down for the stroller or the dog.  Our valco stroller JUST fits, like with less than an inch to spare. If it's the 5 of us + dog and we need more storage, we use a roof box.

Love the car, love how it drives, love the sliding doors, love the gas mileage, love that it takes regular/not premium gas, and I think it would be absolutely perfect if we didn't have 3 kids.     If we ever go on a longer trip, we plan to just rent a minivan.

  • Also have loved the Mazda 5, especially living in a city with on street parking.  Way more interior space than the exterior would have it seem.

My husband has very long legs, so needs to push the driver's seat fairly far back, and we still have room for rear facing convertible car seats in the second row.

As other comments indicate, there isn't enough space for more than 4 passengers AND lots of cargo.
