Trouble TTC

xp: IUI #3=BFN

So AF finally arrived today, but I already called it at the beginning of the week when my temp plummeted. I was planning on doing another Clomid/IUI cycle, but the RE suggested that we move on. Since I over-responded even on Clomid, we were hoping to keep with the Clomid a bit longer and then move to IVF if necessary when we felt ready, skipping IUI with injectibles altogether (with IVF the over-response could obviously still be a big issue, but at least we would have control over how many embryos we transfer and if I did develop OHSS, we could always freeze everything and postpone ET).

?It turns out that my health fund requires 3x IUI/inject cycles before IVF. Our RE did say that he is worried about OHSS and HOM in my case with the injects/IUI and that this is a common issue for lean PCOSers in particular, but that it's important for us to try it, starting at a low dose and with lots of monitoring, and see how it goes. Hopefully, I will get KU:) but I figure if not, if the cycle is a technical success and we make it to IUI, I will continue with the injects/IUI for 2 additional cycles and if the cycle is a disaster, we will pay OOP to go to IVF before the 3 injects/IUI cycles are up.
IUIs #1-3 (1x unmedicated, 2x Clomid) = 2 BFNs, 1 m/c at 7w3d

Re: xp: IUI #3=BFN

  • I'm so sorry about the BFN :(

My RE had the exact same concerns, and wouldn't prescribe injectibles without IVF.  Hoping that your first IUI + injects brings your BFP!

    ((hugs))

  • Sorry about the BFN Blue :(

If you ended up overstimulating with the injects, can a case be made to the insurance company (by your doctor) that continuing that course of treatment is medically unsafe for you? It seems to me that an insurance company cannot make something a requirement that threatens the health of the patient.  I know I appealed a decision by my insurance co years ago regarding coverage of surgery that they refused and won (the appeal was to NY state), but I'm not sure what the regs are by you.  Either way, it sounds like you have the means, but why should it not be covered?

Good luck this cycle, I hope you won't have to worry about any of this!

This.  It really is worth seeing if you can get an exception for health reasons if you over respond to small doses.  I know doing the first IVF cycle we weren't so scared about the money.  It was a big deal, but at least we thought it would give us a chance.  Now that two are down and we haven't seen success, things look a lot different.  While IVF has a lot better success rate, it isn't a sure thing.  If my insurance provided coverage for it, I would fight tooth and nail to get it covered.  That leaves your options open if you need.  I really hope all of this is a mute issue, though and you get PG on your first IUI + injects!  Good luck!

  • Thanks for the good thoughts, ladies! And yes, if the IUI with injects ends up being a disaster (and by disaster I don't mean a BFN, but rather that I totally over-respond), I am hoping that perhaps the argument can be made to our health fund that continuing IUI with injectibles is a danger to my health (but let's really hope it doesn't come down to that:)
