Trouble TTC

Question about HSG

Hi Ladies,

If AF shows this month..due 1/13/11, I will have to go for an HSG. As a nurse I know how the procedure is done, and I know it's associated with some cramping.  My question to you ladies is was the cramping mild, or more like period cramps? How long did the procedure take? Any advice you would give someone going for an HSG? Any information provided would be greatly appreciated.  By the way, I'm new to the bump and I'm looking forward to getting to know all of you!

Re: Question about HSG

  • I don't have an answer for you, but I wanted you to know I'm in the same boat.  If AF comes this month I also have to go for an HSG.  I just had major cramps today, which usually means she'll come tomorrow.  I look forward to reading this advice as well.

  • I had an HSG a couple weeks ago. I took an 800 mg Ibuprofen about an hour before I went.  I had no cramping and just a little discomfort.. The procedure itself wasn't bad at all. If you want more detail let me know.

  • I had an HSG last fall. I also took some Ibuprofen before I went. Mine didn't hurt much at all; I was pleasantly surprised. I would recommend taking a pad with you. They gave me one, but it was one of those huge uncomfortable ones.

    Good luck!

  • I had one in October and was really expecting lasting pain.  Overall the procedure was unremarkable, but when I had cramping it was bad cramping (sorry...), it was like the worst AF cramps I have, sweating and hot flashes, but that lasted only about 30 seconds and when it was over, it was over.  I didn't bleed after or need a pad, but you should definitely have one just in case.

  • The cramping wasn't bad at all. A lot like period cramps and the worst of them were gone within an hour. I had some very mild cramping for about a day or so though. I did however have this weird ringing in my ears during the procedure. The RE told me it was a possible side effect and didn't seem worried.

I didn't take any meds and would have been fine to drive home but dh was with me anyway. Good luck!

  • How long did the procedure take? My OBGYN said it should take like 15 min.  When I called to make an appt they told me it would take an hour.

The procedure itself took only about 15 minutes from start to finish but my dr office makes you wait 30 minutes before they let you leave to make sure you'll be alright. And then there's the 15 or so minutes of check in/going over how the procedure works. So I ended up being there for about an hour.

  • Thank you for your honesty about the cramping and sharing your experience. I think I will try premedicating with Ibuprofen.

  • I had mine done a few months ago.  I was expecting bad cramping, what I experienced was more than that, I would describe it as full on pain.  Thankfully the worst of it (the actual pain part) was only at the end for about 2 minutes.  The rest was just bad cramping.  I didn't have any lasting cramps that day.  I did take 800 mg of ibuprofen beforehand, but I would have had to take a lot more to have made a difference I guess.

Different women on here have had difference experiences.  Some have described it as a nightmare, others have compared it to a pap smear.

I would say it took about 15 minutes, maybe a little more.

ETA: They didn't make me stay after the procedure, I was able to get dressed and leave.

  • Its been about a year since I had my HSG, but I remember being so nervous/scared. After it was over, I was like whoa! that was a breeze! I also took 800mg Motrin as recommended by the RE. I had maybe slight mild cramping, but it was more of a discomfort during the procedure. I don't think anybody likes all these foreign objects and procedures that we have to go through. Its very similar to the intrauterine ultrasound, as far as how it feels, etc. Good luck with your HSG! I'm sure it will be just fine!
  • Mine was very painful, but the pain only lasted about 2 minutes and I didn't have any cramping after.  I did have some light bleeding, but I was able to go back to work immediately after.

    Good luck!

  • When I had mine done, the radiologist told me that some people feel nothing, and others terrible pain, and everything along that spectrum is normal. Unfortunately I was closer to the terrible pain end :(  But the worst pain only lasted a couple minutes.

I was in the room maybe 35 minutes, including the nurse prepping me and waiting a few minutes for the doctor. Mine took longer than usual because they had a hard time getting the tube thingy into the right spot.

I was pretty dizzy when it was over, so I was glad that my husband was there to drive me home. Also, I bled for 2 days afterward, but this is not typical.  If you can't tell, the whole experience was not great for me... but don't let this scare you because most people don't have it so bad.

  • I found it to be painful when they inserted the catheter, and pretty uncomfortable the rest of the time, but not OMFGI'MGONNADIE or anything like that.

It took 15-20 min. The dye came out of my tubes almost immediately, but the doc did have me roll around a bit because he suspects a large fibroid at the top of my ute.

  • I found it to be a lot more painful than I expected. I took 2 advil, and wish I had taken 4. The procedure is very short, like 10 minutes for me, since my tubes were clear. After I had to wear a pad all day (they gave me one), and I felt bloated and uncomfortable (walked funny). I went to work after it, but ended up leaving early because I was uncomfortable, I wish I had taken the day off.

Also, before my HSG they had me pee in a cup for a urine test, not sure why, and most other ladies on here don't seem to have that happen.

Possibly for a quick preg test. They asked me about 100 times if I was pregnant or could and when my last period was.

OP - The pain for me was not bad at all.  The radiologist asked what my periods are like (I said really bad) and he said that can be an indicator as to what type of pain you will have with an HSG. Mine felt like a bad pap - lots of prodding and stuff, but no real cramping. But then again, the dye only went into my ute because my tubes were blocked. I am not sure if your tubes are open if it is more painful.

    Good luck!

  • HSG was pretty short, probably about 15 minutes for the actual procedure. Mine was pretty painful, but it was them putting the catheter in that hurt (I have a tilted cervix so that's why it was painful). As soon as it was done, I had almost no pain at all. Maybe a few very mild period kind of cramps. My dr. had me take 600mg of ibuprofen before the HSG so I think that helped. And bring a pad for the spotting afterwards- I didn't and the hospital one was huge!

    Good luck!

  • I had mine done in September.  The whole procedure took about 20 minutes and was not comfortable, but I was not in pain either.  I did take ibuprofen before the appt and I'm glad I did.  Good luck!

  • My RE did both of my HSG's.  Each time I took 800mb ibuprofen 1 hour before the procedure.  It felt like mild/moderate menstrual cramps during the actual dye insertion, but that only lasted a few minutes.  I had mild cramps on and off for a day or so after.
