They are a little matchy for my tastes. They begin with the same two letters, and they are both relatively short. It's not a deal breaker, but I would see if you can find a non-G name you like just as much (and keep this one on the list in case you don't).
I am not a fan but it's not that bad. My SIL only names her kids things that start with Gr and their mn has to start with an M. Now that is limiting yourself!

I'm actually having this issue too. My daughter is an E and our number one boy name is also an E. We tried to go around that and find something else we loved, but nothing quite stacks up. I don't feel obligated to have a third E if we go for a third child...I'm more about the name story.
So, I suppose my best advice is that if you can't find anything you guys love more than Gavin, then don't dismiss it. They have different syllable counts which makes me feel a little better, but just know you'll probably trip up on your G names for the rest of your life. Heck, me and my sister don't share the same letter, and she still gets us mixed up. However it's a lot more noticible in my cousins family where there are five D children. My aunt sounds like a gibbering idiot when she calls for one of them.
Personally, I would never do it but I'm extremely picky about sibling names. DH and I love the name Calvin but decided when we named Clara that it was off the table. I also know a family with 3 M-names and a J and the last has always seemed out of place to me.
I was one of 5 kids- all with the same letter for our first names. I *hated* it- mostly because I was last & people spent so much time stuttering over all the names they never got to mine lol! So personally, I really do not like matching names in that way. Those are both great names, I just don't like them together for that reason.

Wow. Hope she's not planning on having too many kids, she might have to get really creative with that.
I don't think it's bad, just NMS. Having said that, DH comes from a family that does it intentionally. Their names are Darren, Duane, Danielle & Douglas. The next generation is Bradley & Brittany and Eliza & Emelia. Thankfully, SIL broke the tradition with Alec & Ryan as I had already told DH that I had no intention of continuing with it. This LO is Keira, next girl will be Tessa or if a boy, Liam.
Re: Are sibling names with the same letter too matchy?
I think its a matter of opinion, you will probably get mixed responses. Some can't stand it and some like it.
If I have a DS I like the name Magnus and My DD is Makaia. I like the way it sounds and looks together.
I think Gavin and Gage is cute.

I love Magnus.
I think it is ok as long as we don't go all Duggar and have 18 G names.
Giovanni, Grant, Gianna, Gwen, Garrett, Gregory, Ginny.
No, I like them both a lot! I don't think it's too matchy.
I know a Kendall and a Kyler.
Agreed. I think it's fine as long as you don't have a dozen kids with G-names.

Hey girls.
Both my brother and I were CCC's. I honestly always liked it as a kid and as an adult (before I took my hubbys name)
It was kind of fun and quirky.
