VBAC

Intro

I am due June 1 with my second, and my goal is to have an unmedicated VBAC.

DS was born April 2009. I was induced at 37w6d for pre-eclampsia, but was dilated to 5 and having some contractions before the induction started. I was given mag-sulfate for the pre-e, pitocin, and forced to stay in bed, on my back, due to the meds/catheter, fetal monitoring, and bp monitoring. I got an epidural after a few hours (can't remember exactly when). I dilated to 8-9 then stalled, and actually got smaller due to my cervix swelling. This was about 12 hours after the induction started. The doctor decided to do a c-section because the baby's heartrate was getting high and they didn't think I was going to progress the rest of the way. I don't necessarily agree with the second part, but I didn't question him too much since the reason given was the baby's heartrate. Turns out DS was posterior, which might have caused the cervical swelling and "failure to progress." I recovered from the c-section fine but was upset because it was not what I expected or wanted.

I am small-framed, 5'3" and slim. My (new) doctor says my pelvis is slightly small, but she doesn't think a VBAC is impossible. To make it more of a possiblility, I know I need to be able to move around and labor in different positions - hence my desire to not have an epidural this time. I am also starting to do squats and pelvic rocks every day. I am looking forward to reading many success stories here and also finding out what you have done to prepare and get through your VBAC successfully!

Re: Intro

  • Welcome!  I'm rather small as well, although fortunately my new doctor has not mentioned anything about pelvis size! :)  (my old OB certainly did)

Congrats on your pregnancy, and best of luck with your VBAC! :)

  • Congrats on your pregnancy! My first was posterior as well, but my VBAC was great. :) I'm 5'2", btw, but I was told my pelvis was normal. The doctor who did my c/s measured it during the surgery and told me before I was discharged that there was nothing wrong with me physically and no reason to think I'd need a c/s again. (I know what a lot of y'all are thinking? 'imagine that happening in the US!' I do love this about Denmark!)

Here is my success story if you're interested. I had some red raspberry leaf tea for the last few weeks of pregnancy and I tried to stay active to keep Bug from going posterior.
