Help Me Buy a High Chair!

Hi all,

I'm struggling with high chair issues. Questions I have include:

  • Should you add a high chair to your registry if you plan to breastfeed? What age do you need one?

  • What's a good high chair for a counter height table?

  • Baby Bargains recommends Fisher Price chairs, but they're so ugly! Do you keep your chair out or do you fold it away often? Does it even matter what it looks like?

  • Any other features you recommend?

Thank you, Mommies!

Re: Help Me Buy a High Chair!

  • I registered for this... I didn't want to have a separate high chair in my kitchen and my friend used this with her daughter as well and it worked well...

  • pick the one that is absolutely 100% clean-able. They get DIRTY.  And not a machine washable one, you won't have time between meals. Plastic may be ugly but it's useful here.

Yes you will use something even if you bf. I actually used my high chair pretty early to put them in the kitchen while I was cooking dinner, etc.  It reclined, so they used it from about 3 months on.

It's been sitting in our kitchen for about 3 straight years until I only just packed it away to the basement a few months ago...DD used it for about 1.5 years then DS arrived  =)

We had an adjustable height one that you could take the tray off and use at the table for a booster seat.

  • personally I like the space saver highchairs that can convert into a booster later, It saves you money and space.

  • We have the Graco 4-in-1 High Chair and I love it.  It changes as your child grows.

  • Yes, you will still need a highchair even if you breastfeed.

We have a Graco DuoDiner Highchair. The height is adjustable, so it's great for both our standard height table and our bar height table. The seat cover is machine washable and comes out looking brand new.

I agree the Fisher Price chairs would certainly clash with our decor. We always leave our highchair out. DS sits in it more than 3 times a day, so putting it away after each use would be a waste of time.

My friend has a highchair similar to this. I love it. It looks so nice and I imagine it's easier to detail clean it (plastic chairs have cracks and crevices that can collect crumbs).

  • Well you can't breastfeed your baby sweet potatoes, so yeah you will need one. =)

You can put it on the registry so you can use the completion discount on it later if you want. (Though a 20% coupon might svae you more anyway.)

I started with the Fisher Price Space Saver and it was good in the beginning. Then she started feeding herself and it got MESSY fast. I couldn't stand having to clean it off.

I ended up getting the Ikea plastic high chair and an extra tray for a total of $35. I put an $18 washing machine tray (like for on wood floors or a second story) underneath it to catch her mess. I'll get her a booster seat someday that is just a booster.

  • We have a regular Graco high chair and a Fisher Price space saver that my SIL passed down to me.  We prefer the high chair because it's easy to move around and the plastic on the chair is eaiser to clean then our wood chairs.  We use the Space Saver when we go camping and traveling.  I think it might be time to use a booster seat, so we will be putting the high chair away for a while.

I think the Graco Blossom looks awesome!  I would totally love to have that one.

  • Around 6 months you'll start feeding the baby solids. Even if you continue exclusively breastfeeding, you'll want to start some sort of solids to help LO learn how to eat and also later (around 8 months) learn the dexterity of the hand to mouth by picking up Puffs or other pieces of food.

My one recommendation is that you get one that reclines a little bit so that it works early through toddler years.

  • The Chicco Polly highchair is what we have and we really like it.  Folds flat and is easy to transport when we take it to the grandparent's house, and moving from room to room.  Cleaning is easy too.

When DD first started eating solids though we didn't use her highchair, we used the Bumbo chair and just put her in front of us right on the table or the sofa.

We have this and love it too! I like the neutral color and it has a few different colors for the insert. You can easily adjust the height. It reclines a few different levels for when DD is drinking a bottle in the chair. I like the straps and the fact that there are 3 different trays (a snack tray, the regular tray, and a clear plastic cover). It makes cleaning easy.

  • We never got a high chair. Too bulky, take up too much space, not very attractive looking IMO. Instead we opted for a booster seat like this one. It straps to the existing chair, can be pushed up under the table, doesn't take up extra room, and grows with the child. Win all the way around.

We started using the booster when we started solids at 6 months. We breast fed until 14 months. The two are not related. Even when breast feeding, eventually your child will eat solid food.
