Has anyone ever done Mary Kay/Avon/Pampered Chef etc.?

Have you ever done one of these and actually found success through it?  I don't mean making a substantial amount of money, but did you find it worth while?

Re: Has anyone ever done Mary Kay/Avon/Pampered Chef etc.?

  • I did MK for a few months. I definately made money but it was a commitment I didn't like having. They try to get you to buy like 1200 worth of inventory but you don't have to and they have a buy back program.

  • I am currently a Mary Kay lady, but I honestly don't do much with it other than place orders from time to time.

I haven't yet put forth the effort into making it successful...I just don't feel the motivation right now, but maybe some day!

I know someone who is a PartyLite salesperson and it allowed her to be a stay at home mom for many many years.  Now that her kids are all older and in school all day, she decided to rejoin the "regular" workforce, but she still sells the candles and does well.
And, she did put forth the effort to do so.

  • I guess it depends on what you mean by worthwhile.

My MIL is deeeeep into Mary Kay, and I "sell" it to keep her from pestering me, but I really do nothing with it. For her, it's a legit business, and she considers herself a small business owner. She's modestly successful with it, but the vast majority of her time is devoted to recruiting new people to her team. She's even tried to get DH involved.

My friends know I "sell" it, and will usually ask me if there's something specific they want, but I don't give parties and I don't advertise it. I've never met anyone IRL who actuallys enjoys hosting/attending direct sales parties.

I do like some of the products, especially Pampered Chef, but I'd much rather order online. I think the MK/PC sales model is on it's way out, to be honest.

  • I sell Mary Kay and it allows me to be able to stay home with my daughter. Plus I love the friendships I have gained through it. So yes, I find every minute worth while.
  • I am a MK consultant, and have been one for almost 5 years. I really enjoy it. Before I had my son, I was working a regular job full time and did MK about 10 hours a week. I made quite a bit of money then and earned a free car. When I had my son, I stopped putting so much time into the business because I coudn't work 40 hours a week at my regular job and then come home to do MK. I had built up a really good business though and it has sustained me well over the last couple of years. I will be a stay at home mom after #2 arrives in March and will be definitely working my MK business again. I am skeptical of all direct sales companies, but MK is truly a wonderful company with a great opportunity. It's not a get rich quick company - but you always get out of it what you put into it. The product is great, and sells itself. The trick is finding people who will try it. Once they try it, they love it.

Stepping off of my soap box now....

  • I think of all of them you should sell MK. One of my sisters sold Avon for years and wasn't very successful at it, but I think it was more her and not the product. I feel with Pampered Chef most of the items are a 1 time purchase because they are cooking supplies (bowls, pots, etc.) With MK you would have many repeat customers and I know a lot more people who use MK products instead of Avon. Plus if you do choose to go the MK route, please let me know as I would like to order some moisturizer from you Big Smile

  • I did Pampered Chef before I had dd for about 8 mo. It was fun, a little nerve racking but like others, I did not put too much effort into it to make it successful. I love their products and would go back at anytime. But to be successful you need to have 2-3 parties a week and follow-up with your customers and constantly book events. Wow,  you got me thinking...a may want to start up for extra cash.

The thing is I would have to get new clients. Most ppl I know are all "Partied" out.

Too much work with an LO, unless you have other support (dh at night) all the time.

What were you thinking?? MK, PC etc? There are other ones out there now, more eco friendly products that ppl may have not seen before. Shaklee etc...

  • I am a consultant for Scentsy, just started in August, and I have so far made about $600 cash, about $200 of which was put back in as investment, and tons of free product that I used for blog giveaways and Christmas presents.

That was during the busiest season, and it is going to take some time this spring to maintain that level of business and grow it, but I like it as a side job to help pay some debt and we use that money for our "blow" money to go out to dinner, buy things we want but are outside our budget, etc.

Out of all the programs I looked at, the requirement to stay emplyed is very small (only sell $150 every 3 months) and the initial buy package is only $100, with me reinvesting about $100 a year back into it.

Um, yeah. The Bump be too crazy for pics of my kid.
  • I am a NuSkin distributor and am mostly in it for the discounts.  The people I have recruited are mostly in my same boat, doing it casually and part time.  My friends know that I sell and will ask me if there is something they want but I don't really do parties or events right now.  When the distributors I've signed up buy product I do make a little money so sometimes it covers my products so I have some months with no out of pocket expenses.  I do hope one day to be able to do it full time and turn it into a career if I am any god at it.  My mother is an executive within the company and does pretty well for herself as a career.

My sister is a Surprise Lady with Surprise Parties and for a few years has made a pretty decent income with it.  She has to put in nearly full time hours for planning, networking, marketing, etc. but when she was fresh out of college with no job prospects, it proved to be a good job that she could do around her job hunting.

  • I do mark but I really just joined to buy my own make up. It was inexpensive to join and there is no membership fee. So I buy my own makeup at cost and sell a little to friends and family. We just move to a new area a couple months ago. I think once I start making friends I might start to try to actually make money.

  • I tried Mary Kay and it was hard but I think if you know a lot of people and put the time into it, it could be good.
  • I am starting Thirty One on Saturday!  I am excited and nervous.  We'll see how it goes...
