We have both. The Kelty is easier for real hiking, Ergo (back carry) better for just walking around.
"Hello, babies. Welcome to Earth. It's hot in the summer and cold in the winter. It's round and wet and crowded. At the outside, babies, you've got about a hundred years here. There's only one rule that I know of, babies. God damn it, you've got to be kind."
- Kurt Vonnegut
We've done quite a bit of hiking with our eldest. His first summit was Sugar Loaf in Wales at the age of 6 months! For walks "around the neighborhood" (we live in the Cotswold Hills of England...so around the neighborhood is the English countryside -- walks around 1-3 miles) or around town, we love the Ergo. We usually walk a mile and a half or so to a nearby lake...then let Alex down to play...then get him back in the carrier to go home.
But for real hiking (over 3 miles or so), we definitely prefer the Kelty. It has a nice little extra storage space for water, an umbrella, etc. and he sits up higher and seems to stay happier (because he can see out...though he does not sleep in the Kelty as comfortably as he sleeps in the Ergo).
Our recent MO has been to put Alex in the Kelty for walks and Eddie in the Ergo...though we do have two Ergos for airports, shopping trips in town, short neighborhood walks, etc.
