Re: Recommend your nanny payroll/tax service

  • I did it myself.  It was a lot of work and a lot of googling.  We had a part-time nanny for July and August.

I had the government send me W-4 forms, and I had the nanny fill it out.  There is also an I-9 form for employment verification.

Publication 926 was the most helpful.

I used the paycheck calculator to figure out withholding taxes on this website and print out a paycheck stub.

I ordered W-2  and W-3 forms from the government.  I just sent in my W-2 and W-3 to the government at the end of the year.  And I sent my previous nanny a copy of the W-2.

I set up a master business license with Dept. of Licensing so that I could pay quarterly state unemployment taxes.  I went to an office close to downtown, and they helped me fill it out.  It cost me $15.

Last step for us is Schedule H for our taxes.

There are different websites out there that will do nanny payroll/tax service.  I am thinking that www.4nannytaxes.com has a service.

  • Wow, thank you!  Especially for the state unemployement tax.

I've seen a couple services out there, but really don't know how to compare.  If I don't find one soon, this will save me a TON of work.  Thanks!

Good resources.  We got a license with the state and did it all ourself..of course now we have an in-home employee business license but no nanny :)  We were able to do everything online or by fax, and avoided going in to any offices.

  • We also got our business license and do it ourself. My husband met with our accountant for a few hours to make sure we set it all up right, but now we have it in a spreadsheet  so we just have to enter in the hours and it calculates everything for us.

The payroll services I found seem to run around $1200/year so this has definitely been a huge area of savings for us!

GTM is a great company!  If you end up needing a place to call, try them - they've been a lifesaver to my family.
