Does anyone give their LO an iron supplement? After his 12 month bloodwork DS's pedi prescribed Ferrous Sulfate. The pharmacy didn't give us any detailed info on it- just said to give 1ml two times per day.
I just Googled it and it found it should be taken on am empty stomach- 1 hour before a meal or 2 hours after a meal and at least 2 hours before an antibiotic (which DS is also taking for an ear infection). I'm not sure how to schedule this with meals, snacks, being at the sitter, etc.
I'll call his pedi tomorrow, I just thought I'd ask here.
Re: iron supplement
I give Georgia the Tri Vi Sol and the Poly Vi Sol...not together. I give her the Poly (it's the one with iron) maybe 2 or 3 times a week, and the Tri the rest of the time.
It just tastes so terrible, I am sure Georgia would refuse it every day. But, I figure it certainly can't hurt...
Guess I am not much help...hopefully someone can answer your question :-)
My twins were borderline anemic at 12 months and the supplement freaked me out when I did the research on it. I worked with my doc and she gave me 4 weeks to get their iron up on my own without the supplement. Through diet, DS came up substantially, DD a little. I begged for another month and by the end of that they were both in the normal range, no supplements.
I switched to whole grain cheerios- more iron. Every morning they had boiled prunes, raisins and dried apricots pureed and mixed with baby cereal and yogurt or mashed banana and milk. Afternoon snack was yogurt mixed with baby cereal. Chicken nuggets are the only animal based protein they'd eat, so they got them almost daily for lunch. Vitamin C rich foods served with iron helps the iron absorb more.
Now I do not give a supplement except when they are sick or teething and not eating. If I did, however, I would follow the manufacturer's directions eexactly. I think talking to the pedi is a good idea to clear up questions. Good luck.
ETA: Sorry- just reread your post and realized my answer has nothing to do with your question. If I were you I'd make a chart and plug in meds around meals and snacks. I love charts!
Thanks.
I should have asked about changing his diet before jumping on the vitamins. I didn't realize they would be trickier than a daily multivitamin.
I'm sure it does taste bad. I know iron for adults is horrible. It smells like strawberry though. I use to give Tri Vi Sol and DS took it with ease. I tried Poly Vi Sol once and DS hated it. Now with the iron supplement currently provided he screams and cries. Not so fun for a 2xday thing.
