"Surprise" internal today

At my 36 week appointment today I got the group B strep test. While I was in the stirrups, ob says, "Since you're here in this position, let's just check your cervix." All of sudden, I'm having an internal done - yikes! High and closed, just like I would have thought. It wasn't terribly painful, but I will definitely be declining them from now on. I didn't want them until 40 weeks anyway, but I was caught off guard! Indifferent

  • Lovely.  No need to ask Dr.  What's mine is yours.

  • Oh goodness.  That's a nice little surprise.  My first one is tomorrow and I'm hoping they don't tell me high & closed.  Does that mean you are not effaced or dilated yet?  What is the norm for 36 wks?

  • I had my 36week one done last Friday I was 1.5cm dilated, 50% effaced.
  • That's weird. You got a "surprise internal" today, and I got a "surprise non-internal." I was told  twice by people in the practice i'd be getting my first one today. The doctor I had two appointments ago and the lady that took my blood pressure. Well, doc came in, gave me the GBS swab, and said they'd just do an internal next time. Boo. I did want one though, more because I want to know what is going on. I've been having a lot of pelvic pains and I was wondering if it was doing anything. Oh well.

Sorry you got caught off guard though :(

  • lol, that's funny that's exactly how I had my first one last week. But my doctor won't do anymore unless she feels it's necessary.

  • I think that's probably par for the course.  My midwife checked my cervix on Monday and it was also totally closed, which is normal for this stage of the game.  I do remember having one done last pregnancy around 38 weeks and it was much more painful, maybe because I was starting to dilate.
