Just wondering if it's perscribed by your RE or your OB/GYN and what sort of monitoring or testing they do while your on it. My OB/GYN has me on it and hasn't mentioned any sort of testing or anything. Is that normal?
My RE put me on it and i wasnt really monitored in any way. I got blood work done before i started it, took it for two months, and went back for more blood work. I have PCOS with elevated testosterone and I think he was trying to get my hormone levels to normalize. Turns out the opposite happened and my testosterone was even higher than when i started going to him so had to go back on the pill for two months, BUT i did lose 10 or 15 pounds. My weight fluctuates, but i started between 220 and 225 and ended up in the low teens.
I have never been closely monitored on it. My OB started me on it about two years ago and I have blood work done with my annuals. I have pcos too.... sadly i gained weight on it : ( BOO!!

My RE put me on it last November and said they wanted to do b/w every six months while I stayed on it. Something with my liver but I don't remember what exactly.
From what i know there isn't any standard monitoring with metformin. if you are insulin resistant they may have you do the glucose test periodically to make sure your dosage is correct. Or if you experience major side effects you will need to let your doctor know. I know I will be 'checking in" with my RE when I need refills on the metforming to ensure that its still working for me.
When I think of "monitoring" I think of monitoring ovulation and for metformin while some women respond by ovulating naturally there aren't any side effects and this isn't a direct cause of the metformin so doctors wouldn't be monitoring for that.
