My doctor said that it doesn't work, but then I see how hours after moms to be take some and then go into active labor. I'm only wondering because it seems like there is no end in sight and I don't want to go to far past my due date.
IMO, not worth the risk. There is a possible connection between the use of castor oil and the baby passing meconium during birth. This alone would scare me away from it.

Castor oil can make you feel pretty sick. Maybe it's just me, but even if it does induce labor, I definitely don't want to start labor feeling like utter crap - other potential risks aside.
Wouldn't recommend it. Baby can get really sick or even die from the side effects. My cousin is an L&D nurse and she gets women who overdose on castor oil all the time and it's not pretty.
Lol! I would never had taken castor oil if my MW hadn't of recommended it. But I was on the verge of pre-e and needed to get DD OUT!
She only said to take 2oz and chase it with 4oz of oj. I was concerned about the thought of DD passing muconeum in the womb, but luckily it was just me who ended up messy. I didn't feel a need to throw up though and less than 20 hours later I had DD.
I honestly still would not reccomend it unless you're already ripened and past your due date.

From what I have read, this is a pretty controversal assumption (meconium) so I would not put too much stock into it. Most documents show that there is no real medical research that backs up this claim.
I have no desire to use castor oil to induce labor, but if I am desperate enough, I will take it.

May be a controversial assumption, but is it really worth the risk?? I've known two moms who took Castor Oil to induce labor and BOTH babies ingested meconium. When your body is ready, you'll go into labor. It's rough waiting it out, but seriously, try the the things that WON'T pose a risk to your baby.

My point is that according to research:
1.Any baby born after 40 weeks have a higher chance of passing meconium
2.Babies without using castor oil to induce labor still pass meconium in the womb
3.Many babies born after castor oil inductions are often born without passing meconium
4.Approximately 57% of women who take castor oil go into labor. Remember this is a statistic only and may not take into account how far along they were or other conditions.
I am not saying castor oil is not the cause, I am just saying the research is too premature to put too much stock into it.

Let me also add that my niece never used castor oil but both of her children passed meconium during birth. Is it safe to assume that the walking she did prior to labor caused this?
I only asked because I feel like there is no end in sight and if I did go past 41 weeks I might consider it if I was desperate enough. For some reason I just feel like she wants to stay inside forever and will happily do so.

Yes really starts feeling like a never ending thing towards the end! I've tried exercising , walking tons, sex, bouncing on a yoga ball, and i went bowling for 4 hrs this weekend, and still no more progress, its very frustrating! hopefully you'll go on your own close to your due date and don't have to go over it. I was being sarcastic because knowing 1 or 2 people that it happened to does not make it a trend. Now that I re-read my other posts, I see that I was coming across as a b**ch. Sorry about that. I don't know what my problem was, but I am generally not like that.
For the record, I have NO desire to take castor oil. However, I know quite a few ladies that I have tried it and it was successful for them. I had a pitocin induced labor already, and if I can avoid doing that again, I would.
I took it at 38 weeks. It gave me inconsistent contractions for about 5hrs and then they stopped. It was so disappointing. I took 2oz with a sprite. My Dr. said she doesn't believe it works but she doesn't believe it causes any side effect for the baby so I tried it. The diarrhea wasn't bad at all. Does it work? Egh. At best the contractions help to soften your cervix. I was induced the next day do to my on going low AFI and I worried that I was going to have diarrhea all over the birthing table but I didn't at all and baby came out perfectly fine and healthy.
My mom drank castor oil when she was pregnant with me.She said that it "cleaned her out" and she went into full labor about 4 hours later.she recommends it if youre overdue. But! I've never heard any risks for it,you might want to research it a little bit? Good luck.
