I hate all the conflicting information re: food

I am a huge cheese lover, and my Dr. told me to stay away from brie, feta, goat cheese, blue cheese, and raw cheeses. I totally get the raw cheeses, but I'm hearing from so many people that as long as it's in moderation, the rest are fine. Some say as long as it's pasteurized it's fine. Some say if you cook it, it's fine.

I know my sister ate goat cheese and deli turkey while pregnant and has a healthy baby boy... but I still feel guilty and torn about what to/not to eat.

And I could really go for some brie en croute right now, for the record :)

  • every doctor is different and every doctor has their own opinion on what to eat/not to eat.  That being said I follow what my doctor says and listen to him because I picked him as a doctor for a reason; however, if you feel comfortable eating some of the things that your doctor says not to then just do it in moderation.

  • if you're craving it. Then I say have some. Not 2 lbs of it, but some. I was told only about Pasteurized cheeses and listeria in deli meats. Just make sure if fresh and from a clean place. I have not eaten any deli meats. but if I crave it, I will certainly eat it.

Don't make yourself nuts, just don't overdo it. I don't think some cheese will do major changes to your growing baby.

  • Sorry, but I give a side eye to your doctor.

It is pasteurized, aka, the bacteria is killed.  I don't see what the big deal is.   My doctor said it was fine.  He also said most foods (except for certain fish) were fine.

  • I know what ya mean. Some docs are more overly cautious than others. My current OB is really chill about this stuff. Pasteurization is the most important part. I've also heard if cooked, absolutely fine. For the record I ate a crap ton of deli sandwiches when pregnant the first time, some were heated, some were not. The important part is to make sure it's from a reputable place and not eat it every single day....moderation is key.
  • I twittered Cheve and they said they use pasteurized goat's milk, but I think it's the process of making the cheese with the pasturized milk that grows the bacteria... but I could be wrong, I'm no cheese maker.

I also read to stay away from Goat Cheese in What to Expect and several pamphlets, so it's not just my Dr. (well, the assistant lady that was going over that info with me, not the actual Dr)

  • I'm not gonna lie, I ate Feta all through my first pregnancy and will do so again.  Not copious amounts, mind you, but I did eat it.  If you do feel guilty, try baked brie.

  • Yes, all the conflicting factoids and everyone's personal opinion about what you should be doing is so aggravating!

I trust my OB very much, so I will always try and abide by his recommendations.  However, I did find a blog I like very much - its called the Pregnant Chicken.   Just some down to earth advice (but not from a medical professional).

  • I was told that pasteurized cheeses are fine, no matter what kind of cheese. I was also told that deli meats like Boars Head are okay too. I have eaten feta a few times and have had about 3 Boars Head deli subs since I have been pregnant. I think that you just have to decide on what you are comfortable with and eat everything in moderation from reputable sources.

  • Every doctor is different. My doctor never told me to stay away from any cheeses so I never have. However, I trust my doctor and if he were to tell me to stay away from something I most certainly would. If you trust your doctor, I'd go with what he says. Only he and you know your pregnancy, your history, and what's best for your baby.

This.  The food list my doctors gave me said pasteurized cheese was fine.  I wouldn't want any doctor that wasn't up to speed with what really is and isn't harmful.

  • I think moderation is the key.  I ordered a brie sandwich at our local cheese shop, ate it and loved every bite! I also went to subway the other day.  I won't eat the deli meat at the work cafeteria though because it sits out in a salad bar type set up.

  • My doctor is very lax and only told me to stay away from raw sushi and high mercury fish.  When I specifically asked about cheese, she said pasteurized is best.  I have yet to find a single cheese (goat, feta, and brie included) that is not pasteurized except in a fancy cheese shop.
