Sorry for the re-post, but I would love some feedback: Who has given birth at Abbott and how was you

Please share the good, the bad, and the ugly.

  • I delivered B there, and absolutly LOVED it.  I really did.  I used to work there (though not in L&D) so I may be a bit biased, but it is a really good hospital.  It isnt brand new, but the staff is great, and they know what they are doing.

  • I had DD at Methodist, and DS at Abbot. I had a good experience at Methodist, but I liked Abbot better. I was a little wary about delivering at Abbot, because honestly, it didn't look to be the most up to date, but the staff was great and the post care room had been recently redone. (the food was better at Abbot too) I would go back there in a heartbeat.

  • Thank for your response!
  • Yeah weird, I posted on your first posting, and it got deleted somehow. But I loved Abbott. I had both my babies there. Planned c sections, so I can't comment much on the labor and delivery area, but post partum and surgery were great. And I had longer stays because of the c section. The nurses were great.

Only negative I had is that some of the rooms are super small. First time we had a really small room. DH kept tripping over everything ans swearing, and he never swears. Second time we had a nice big room.

  • I delivered at Abbott and probably won't again.  I thought that the nursing staff was great (with a few exceptions, which I am sure is true everywhere), but the room was so awful!  Super tiny room, no space for guests to sit.  My husband had to sleep in a reclining vinyl chair.  I also wanted to do things without an epi, and no one really supported this.  In fact, as soon as I mentioned it, the nurse came in with "the epidural pump for "when I changed my mind."  I asked if they would be able to use wireless monitoring so I would be able to walk around, possibly get in the tub, but they did not have any, so I was only allowed to move around withing the lengths of all my cords.  I know that Regions did have wireless/waterproof monitoring when I toured there (I switched OB's mid-way through pregnancy, so I had to switch hospitals with the new OB).  The cords in my monitor kept shorting out depending on how the cord was positioned, so they were basically pointless anyway.  As far as food goes, the cafeteria had very limited healthy choices, and they would not let my husband order to the room.  He ended up having to eat McDonalds for several meals since the lunchroom closed pretty early. BTW...McDonalds is built inside the hospital!  What kind of crazy people decided that patients in a hospital needed immediate access to McDonald's??  Hmmmm....what else can I say...the cleaning crew came in the room at the crack of dawn (6am) to mop and sweep and get the garbage, needless to say, it woke me up.

As far as the care, which is absolutely the most important thing, I can say I had great nurses and Dr.s.  That obviously outweighs the negative issues that I experienced.  I certainly wouldn't refuse to deliver there again, but I guess I wouldn't openly pick Abbott given other choices.

  • I just had an extended stay (almost 2 weeks) at Abbott and I would recommend them. The rooms on the 6th floor are small, but after 5 days I was moved to the 5th floor where the rooms are much bigger and have more amenities like a fridge, microwave and couch. The food, eh, it's hospital food and I don't expect greatness. It was good enough for me. I was shocked that they had a 24-hour McD's there too, but at 11:00 pm when you really want ice cream, it came in handy.

I was high risk, so it was the best place for me and my twins to be with Children's right across the street (which you can get to via underground tunnel). The staff is wonderful. I never met a nurse in those 2 weeks that I didn't like. The NPs and doctors explained things clearly and always made sure I understood what was going on. I had an emergency c-section which went well, all things considered. The staff in both the Children's NICU and Abbott Special Care Nursery are on top of their game and awesome.

I hope you don't have to go through an extended stay like I did, and I really hope your babies don't have an extended stay like my girls currently do, but I would recommend Abbott in a heartbeat.

  • I had my girl at Abbott in August of 2010 and loved everything about it. The care, the room, the food - everything was great. My little one stayed in the Special Care Unit for 5 days so I did as well. Doctors and nurses did wonderfull job.
