August 2011 Moms

I really want to dye my hair...

My roots are seriously coming in now. I am waiting until the end of the first trimester, as my husband is freaked out that this will somehow effect the baby, and thinks I shouldn't dye it at all during pregnancy. There is no way I can go until August without coloring my hair! I feel so gross, with bloat, tiredness, acne, and now dark roots coming in:( Yesterday, I developed a painful crack in the heel of my left foot. I am falling apart...

Re: I really want to dye my hair...

  • I had my hair highlighted with my first pregnancy, and I'm planning to color it during this pregnancy.  My doctor told me it was fine.  I say go for it!

  • I was just at my hairdresser's house on Monday for a color.  Her place is ventilated just fine so it's not an issue.  Go for it!

  • Thanks for the advice, guys. I will wait two more weeks, just to make DH happy....it's gonna be a long two weeks Tongue Tied

  • My OB said the same thing - there's no scientific evidence that hair dye has any effect, and told me to go ahead. It may sound vain, but I'm already feeling so gross and bloated and my premature gray roots were just making me feel worse, so I went for it.

And how's this for crazy pregnant logic? I figured I would abstain completely from caffeine during first tri to make up for it.  Because that makes sense.

  • Vstevens, that is funny! I was thinking to myself, "Well, I am still drinking my coffee in the morning, so it would probably be a good idea to wait as long as possible to dye my hair." Somehow the coffee doesn't bother DH, but the hairdye does...this is probably TMI, but I only drink the coffee because if I don't, I will never go to the bathroom:(

  • I'm in the same boat. I need to highlight my hair so badly. I am waiting until after the 1st tri, but it's not too much longer.

I know everyone has a different opinion. I've cut out everything else, there's no way I would last the rest of my pregnancy :)

  • I'm also waiting just until the 1st trimester is over to ease DH's fears. Even though I keep telling him its fine he still is freaked out by it.

I cant wait. By then it will have been 4 months since my last highlight and with how fast my hair is growing now I don't think I'll be able to stand much longer.

  • My original due date put me at 12 weeks this Sat when I have my hair apt scheduled but since our first u/s they changed my due date and now I will only be 11 weeks on Sat but the more I read about getting your hair dyed during pregnancy the less Im worried about getting highlights.

  • I doubt it would actually do any harm, but I'm just too paranoid and am going to wait til the end of first trimester.  My hair was due to be colored right when I found out I was pg, so it looks like garbage right now.  Luckily, it's winter so I've been wearing hats whenever possible.

    Wait, no manicures??? Why?!

I have the WORST gray roots right now. I asked my Dr. yesterday and he said to wait until 2nd trimester. So I guess I'll just suffer. I waited through the 1st with my DD and I couldn't WAIT to get it done!

  • I'm waiting for 2nd tri, but it's really going to be a hard week and a half.  I have a scar on my head that makes the hair grow white.  If I don't keep it covered, my hair looks like Frankenstein's wife with a stripe going down my hair.
  • Coming from a hairdresser, and working with these chemicals daily - You will not harm the baby at all by coloring your hair.  Nothing leaks into your system thru your scalp unless you have an abrasion.  The worry is the smell of certain brands of color, cheaper color tends to have stronger odors (like box dyes). The key is proper ventalation.   And please don't let your husbands make these kind of decisions for you. I see so many women who start off a consultation with, "My husband told me not to...."  It's your hair!

Hair dye and manicures are fine.  It's the strong chemical smells that you should stay away from. Just make sure you go to a well ventilated place.  If your highlighting or going darker, and not full on bleaching your hair, you're fine.

  • This is one of those things that even though there may not be scientific evidence proving it is bad for you, they are still chemicals and more than likely they aren't good for you.

However, you can't avoid everything.  I would be more worried about having the pest guy come spray the inside of your house than I would be sitting in a well ventilated salon getting my nails done.
