Toddlers: 24 Months+

Are you letting your child pick their 3rd Bday theme, or do you already have an idea?

If you already have a theme, please share.

Do you think they are old enough to pick.  I know I still have 3 months (OMG, seriously in 3 months I will have a 3 year old!  Time is going too quick!).

  • I'm picking Smile I want to pick as long as I can. Maybe he can pick for his 4th. lol

I'm thinking about doing a book party. He has so many toys and clothes. He really doesn't need anything else - and we don't want anything else. We'll probably find some way to ask people to bring their favorite book for him so we can build his book collection. Thought about doing a Dr. Seuss party and ask people to bring their favorite Dr. Seuss book, but I think we'd get quite a few repeats if we narrow it down that much.

  • I already have a theme and I've started working on it. :) My excuse is that I am due right around her birthday, so I really need to start now if I want to get all of the cute stuff done.  I am doing a "Tiny Party" with miniature everything: baby cupcakes and a teeny tiny birthday cake, bowls of mini foods like baby goldfish and mini-Oreos, and favors are little pastel metal pails with mini toys in them and tiny pinwheels that I made with the kids' names on them.  There is plenty of time for her to choose her theme in the future, for now I'm keeping it all to myself!
I don't know what's up with my siggy and I am too lazy to figure it out.
  • We just had his party last weekend and I picked the theme. He's too young to make a firm decision IMO and I want to have some say while I can. We did a car theme (not Pixar, just general) and had car cakes that matched his fave cars, balloons, and street sign, license plate, and traffic light decorations. The goodie bags had car tattoos and stickers, a personalized bumper sticker, a little car, some car crayons, and a few pieces of candy.

  • I think I'll be picking, although we have some time.  Maybe do a 'transportation' theme---cars, trucks, planes.   But not sure.  Depends if we are going to have it at our house or Chuck E Cheese.  If it's there, then I suppose no theme is needed.  I'm leaning towards that since I'll have a 2 month old and may not have a ton of time to plan.  LOL

  • My DD has been asking/begging for a princess cake so I think we'll do a disney princess party.  She has been on a princess kick (snow white, belle) since Halloween so I think we will go with that.

  • I let my two year old pick her theme for her birthday this year.  She loves mermaids so that's what we are doing.  We aren't having a really big birthday though so I don't really care.
  • I picked because I could work it into the location.  We're having it at an environmental education center (it has a small zoo and a museum geared towards preschoolers and elementary aged kids).

I decided to do Cat in the Hat theme - we're going to "go go go go on an adventure!"  :)  Most everything is DIY.

I made these invitations and cut them into the shape of a boarding pass because I felt like that said "adventure":

For decorations, we are making tissue poms in red, white and turquoise to hang in the doorway.  I also made a couple banners out of used Cat in the Hat books off Amazon ($3 each), similar to this one, tied a bit differently:

For favors, I'm doing an eco-friendly idea to tie in both Cat in the Hat AND the museum's goal of environmental education.  I'm making resuable snack bags just like this (in 3 diff. Cat in the Hat fabrics):

We'll just do pizza and I'm going to get Cat in the Hat paper plates, etc.

  • I was going to go with a tool/construction party since he loves tools.   I was going to order a tool printable party kit that came with the invites and a bunch of cool printable decor items.   It's a PDF file so I can print them at home.

Then DS told me he wants a car party.   We're going to keep it just regular cars.   The same esty seller has a  car package so I'll order  that.   I found a cool idea for a racetrack cake.   DS went nuts when I showed him the pic!  I found some cute car stuff at Oriental Trading for goody bags so we're going with a car theme.

So we're letting him pick this year.     I'm trying to avoid character parties for as long as I can.   I managed to do a train party without Thomas(other than a Thomas shaped balloon and we did use Thomas plates to serve the cake)    so I'm sure I can manage a car party without Lighting McQueen taking over my house!

  • I'm picking the theme, but I'm pretty confident that DS would choose what I am doing anyways.

When DD was younger, I let her pick, but once she hit about 6 y/o, I started making the theme a surprise. She absolutely loved it that way. DH would take her out of the house the morning of the party and she'd come home a half hour before party time to discover the theme. We decided to keep the same tradition with DS.

  • DD has been OBSESSED with having a Hello Kitty party for months now. She doesn't even really know who Hello Kitty is, she just has underwear with her on it. lol  So we let her choose. We showed her a bunch of other choices about two weeks ago, but she was really firm on wanting this theme. I really wanted to do Candyland though. :(

  • DS picked his theme for his 3rd birthday and kind of for his 2nd birthday. He was with me at the party store and got SOOO excited about the fire truck stuff that we did that for his 2nd. He wanted Mickey Mouse for his 3rd so that is what we did. He has already asked for a tractor theme for his 4th birthday.

DD kept asking for Minnie Mouse for her 2nd birthday so that is what we did even though I didn't want to since I had done Mickey for DS. Oh well, it was just family and a few family friends so it didn't really matter and it made DD happy.

  • I still have a few months but I'm already planning. I gave her 2 choices, Fairies or Candy Land. I have asked her several times over the course of a few weeks and Candy Land is a clear winner. I assume that my choosing time is running out so I'm trying to steer clear of any character themes until she requests them. I'm sure if I took her to a party store she would choose Wonder Pets or Disney princesses so I avoided that route.
My 2 girls, both born on a Friday the 13th, are exactly 2 years, 2 months, 2 hours and 2 minutes apart! And Baby Boy joined us October 11, 2013! image
