Seeing loaters and shooting stars

yesterday I bend to the side to pick up something and when I came back up I saw a lot of "shooting stars" and today I still once in a while some floaters in my vision. My BP is fine and I just have a small cold. I guess its just from the increased blood volume. Anyone else?

Re: Seeing loaters and shooting stars

  • I see stars ever once and a while. Sometimes I think I see them because my BP has dropped or because my sugar levels have dropped. I only get worried if I feel like i'm going to pass out.

I don't know what loaters are. Are you talking about little things floating around in your vision? I've been told that those are associated with a silent migrane. I usually see those before I get a migrane.

  • I'm high risk for retinal tears.  Anything like this would send me to the eye doc.  If you have a regular eye doc it would be worth at least calling them for input.
  • I've seen stars a couple of times in the last few months of this pregnancy. They always happen after I've bent over or bent down. I think you're right about it being blood volume related - a blood rush to the head? I'm thinking it's pretty normal.

Also, I see floaters when I'm stressed. I've never asked the doctor about it but I think stress can affect your vision too.

  • very normal with the extra blood flow. You just have to get up slowly or watch how you move.

as long as you don't have floaters with a really awful headache, you're fine.

  • I was having this happen a lot.  Not just when I stood up, either--I would see little spots for an hour or two sometimes, like the aura you get with a migraine but without the headache.  It turns out I am very hypoglycemic, which was never an issue for me before pg, but now I have to really watch that my blood sugar doesnt dip too low or it happens again.  My doc recommended snacking on nuts or protein to keep my blood sugar more stable.

I don't want to scare you but my experience is this:

After 3-4 days of noticing floaters in my right eye (especially while reading/being on the laptop etc) I complained to my hubby as we were going to bed and thought nothing of it.  The next day he called me from work to tell me that a co-workers wife had floaters and she was told that if she'd waited any longer (to be checked) then she would've lost her vision.  So needless to say, that freaked me out.  I didn't have a regular optometrist at that point, so DH called a local one and they told me to go to the Emergency room at one of our local hospitals asap.

That Emergency room sent me for an emergency appointment (the next day)at a corneal specialist in my city, where I had drops in my eyes to dilate my pupils and after having a look, he told me he saw some issues with my retina and since that wasn't his speciality, he was sending me to a retina specialist at our local hospital (not the same one as the day before).  He called over and had DH take me there immediately!!!

After the retina specialist (the best one within all of Southern Ontario, from what I've been told) checked it out, she said I did, in fact have a retina tear that could lead to blindness and I required 4 laser surgeries over a 6 week period to fix it up.  She said the floaters would likely never go away, but I'd get used to them (true for the most part but appear worse when I'm tired) but if I noticed any more, then to go see her immediately.

So with that being said, I would recommended, like one of the PP's said, to call your optometrist and ask their opinion.  You very well could be fine and it could be from being pg, as I know this does effect most people's vision, or they could want to see you.  I DID NOT have an awful headache when I had my floaters either.
