crying day over dr decision

I had a really hard day yesterday and I need to vent. My family doctor is seeing me until OB takes over at 16 weeks (apparently the norm here in ONT Canada). I had really irregular periods before my BFP and my doctor knew this. I met with her yesterday for the first time. I asked her about a dating u/s and she suggested we instead do the screening u/s as it will give us more info. I said okay, but didn't reallly realize that it would not get booked until Jan 26. I haven't had any u/s or heard a heartbeat yet. I really feel lost in the medical system. I called back when I got home and asked if I could get in for a dating u/s she said no she wouldn't send me for one. I bawled my eyes out and was and am so upset. I am guessing I am in my 8th week (not my 10th as LMP would suggest), I want to start taking weekly pics with a little sign as to how many weeks I am ... but I don't really know how far I am and it upsets me. I know I might be making a big deal of a 2 wk window but its important to me. Any thoughts? Or anyone else not seen or heard the baby ... it just sucks knowing I have to wait 2 more weeks to see if there is a baby still in there and that things are going okay!

thanks

lora

Re: crying day over dr decision

  • I'm sorry. : (

There are a few girls on here that have to wait until 12 weeks. I had to wait until 9 weeks, but the good news is, at 10 weeks you will get to see a lot more! The baby will have arms and legs by then, and will look like a real baby and not just a blob, you know?

    Hang in there!

  • Dont worry, I 100% know how you feel having to wait. We must have been posting our post at the same time and I wrote something very similar. I have to wait until 12 weeks for an ultra sound and its driving me crazy
  • I would be upset too!  I think most people do have to wait til their 9th or 10th week anyway, but to make you think you could get an u/s then make you wait two more weeks is pretty harsh.

I'm about as far along as you, and I am sooooo anxious to finally see or hear something.  I get a little bit jealous when I see everyone else's pics, too :D

  • thanks girls for the support ... i do keep thinking at least the u/s pic should turn out good thats what keeping me going

  • I think it sucks that your doc didn't tell you how long the test would take to get in, but you have to remember that in *most* cases the doctor knows best and you have to assume they are operating w/your best interest in mind.  While I had an u/s at 6.5 weeks due to cramping I don't have another u/s until 13 weeks and otherwise wouldn't of had an u/s until then.

Keep your head up, you get to see the baby soon and good news is if your doctor doesn't need you to come in then the other tests must mean everything is looking good :-)

  • I understand too.  I doubt I'll even get an u/s until the 20 wk anatomy scan (I was charting and know my dates).  In a way this is good, because it will mean that everything up to that point looks good, but it's sooo frustrating.

Like you, I just want the reassurance.  I'm really hoping my next appt. on the 20th will bring us a heartbeat.  At least then I can breathe a little easier.

Try to keep in mind that if your doctor thought there was something to be concerned about they would most likely give you an u/s.  Keep your chin up 'til your next appt. and then take it from there :)

OP - where in ON are you from?  I'm originally from Bowmanville (near Oshawa).  All my family is still there, so I get a bit homesick sometimes - more for the Kawartha Lakes area though!

  • I don't get an ultrasound until 20 weeks. I had my first OB appt at 11 weeks and was able to hear the heartbeat with the doppler. I know it really stinks to have to wait but it's really not that far away. Try to keep yourself busy and the time will fly. :)

  • I know it sucks, but all we can do is wait. No sense crying or getting upset about it. It will be here soon :)

I haven't heard the heartbeat or had an ultrasound and I won't until the 24th. By then I'll be 9.5 weeks.

  • I am sorry that you are having to wait; I am in the same position. I won't get my first u/s or hear the heartbeat until 11 weeks. Just know that its actually a good thing, though it is hard to think that way!  Try not to stress and keep your chin up and you will see your LO sooner than you think!
  • I'm sure every first-timer on this board feels the same way about not knowing. I had to have an emergency u/s due to heavy bleeding, but don't get my next one until next week, which is somewhere in the almost 10 wk-11 wk mark (I measured 6 days behind at the last u/s so now I'm not sure where I am in development). I'm still bleeding quite a bit and have cramps, but I'm under the impression that unless I'm filling a toilet with blood or start to pass the fetus, to just wait out for the ultrasound.

    Is it Monday yet?

  • Hey there!

I am in Ontario too - Kingston! I would have loved to get in for an early ultra-sound too, but my doctor told me that are generally scheduled for between 11 and 13 weeks, and closer to 13 weeks so they are able to see more. It is too bad you couldn't get in earlier just to date it. I can imagine most women would love to get in as early as possible though, and if they accommodated all of us it would flood the system with a lot of ultra-sounds taking place too early, and then they would still need to book the later one to get the info they need for testing, so I am OK with waiting.  Also agree with pp if the doctor thought there was any reason to go in earlier, they would send you.

Don't worry, the two weeks will go by in the blink of an eye!!! Nice to see a fellow Ontarian (two!) here!!!! : )

  • I know exactly how you feel!  I haven't even had the opportunity to hear the h/b yet... I have an appointment next Wednesday for that, and I'll be 12 weeks by that time... all I've had is blood tests so far..  I was so anxious for an u/s that I scheduled myself for an NT screening (which actually isn't all that uncommon... they said they usually do that around that time anyway... although that's going to be the day AFTER my dr visit...)... the point is that I'm a first time mommy and so anxious to know what's going on in there, so I know exactly how you're feeling right now!  Best of luck to you with everything!!

  • I wouldn't be too upset by it--at my old dr, with DS's pregnancy, I didn't get an u/s until 16 wks. I was shocked to hear that some dr.'s do them so early. Like PPs have said--at 10 wks, it'll be so much more easy to see what you are looking at, and it'll be here before you know it!

  • Had I not had complications, my doctor doesn't do an ultrasound until the anatomy scan at 18-22 weeks, and they look for the heartbeat with a doppler around 12 weeks.

I know you're probably stressed and anxious, but unless you have any reason to suspect a problem, it's very common to not get early ultrasounds. Believe me- you'd rather wait to see the baby than see the baby because you know you're at high risk for/have had problems.

For the photos, go ahead and start taking them, but mark them by the date. It'll be easy to go back and figure out how far along you are. Or- put the date & your guess of how far you are (8 weeks?). My mother's belly pictures are like that until she had ultrasounds.

  • Just another thought... you might bring up the dating issue to your doc if you're doing the NT scan as that first u/s. The NT scan has a very specific time frame of when it needs to be completed- it would SUCK to find out that the results are completely useless because you weren't actually in that window.
  • I don't have anything more than what the other ladies have said about having to wait.  I know it sucks...

But I had an idea for your pictures.  What if you just take your belly pics without holding the signs?  Put the date on the back of each of them.  Then when you go to scrapbook or journal them, you can use a strip of cute scrapbook paper to write how far you were and mount that with the picture (once you have a dating u/s).  It'll look cute and creative, and then you won't have to worry about your pics being messed up with the wrong dates.

    GL!!

  • I am just over 8 weeks.  I saw my doctor in December for confirmation and my annual, no u/s.  January 18th is the big day, but to be honest I don't even know if he'll do an u/s, he is totally old school and comforting and no stress kinda doc.  So I am completely content.  My mom keeps telling me back when she was pregnant u/s were not done every month to ensure anything.  So I just remind myself as long as this baby is healthy, I'll be okay.  Studies show there is no correlation to the woman's activities and miscarriages, so it's not like it can be prevented.  As for all the testing, I personally would never terminate my pregnancy, so I just have to be patient and positive!

Good luck!   Stay positive and keep your head up! Life is good!

  • I'm from Ontario as well - my first US is Monday and I'll be 10 weeks 3 days - so I think it's pretty standard here to wait a little longer.  I'm dying to get the reassurance as well... can't wait!

  • I don't get an ultra sound until 2nd trimester! I've learned that I have to trust my body! My body is definitely telling me I am pregnant and the baby is growing even though I haven't seen the baby or heard it's heartbeat. I'm actually really surprised by all the ladies that have already had several u/s!

I too am irregular and actually have not have a period since August!! We were trying so I know about when I ovulated which is what I am going by to determine our due date. If it changes a little so what there is still a baby growing in there!!!

  • I don't even get an ultrasound until 20 weeks and I don't understand how everyone else does!!  So don't worry so much it could be worse.  Fortunately my mom is an ultrasound tech and is going to sneak me in for one next saturday and at 15 weeks so she can tell me the sex.  This has been the one time having her be an ultrasound tech has been a great benefit!

I haven't seen an u/s yet, either, and it is so difficult having to wait. It makes me  worry more than necessary, I believe! I get to go next Tuesday and I will be almost 12 weeks! I'm sorry you have to wait that long. Hang in there!
