S/O What is BLW?

I'm trying to figure it out but have no idea.

Re: S/O What is BLW?

  • Baby led weaning. Basically skipping all purees and cereals and going straight to table food.

But there's one way to go about it that's more reasonable, and then there are the people who think it's OK to slap eggs, toast with jelly and sausage links in front of a 6 month old and call it breakfast.

  • baby-led weaning...no spoon feeding. I did this, though just things like avocado and bananas at first, cooked carrots, etc.

  • Baby lead weaning.  I think its where you BF to introducing solids, no cereal or baby food, etc.

  • baby led weaning.  it's feeding a child table food from the start basically (start of solids) instead of spoon feeding purees, they self feed regular food.  I did it with both of mine.  no choice really with my first who lost hisshit every time a spoon came near his mouth.

  • I think it is baby led weaning, or something like that. Pretty much going from milk to table food. I essentially did that with my youngest DS only because he hated purees and pretty much didn't start solids until almost 10mths. He was very much a boob man LOL

  • Baby Led weaning? WTH is a floor bed??
  • Thanks for the BLW.  What is a floor bed?

Glad I'm not alone! Are we talking bed on the floor? Did you dismantle your bed, put it on the floor and co-sleep? Did your kid sleep on the floor next to your bed on the floor?

I formula fed but I thought my DD was the only one that refused pretty much all baby food, she ate some fruit but only sweet potatoes once and would never touch the baby cereal.  But man, this sure sounds cheaper than using baby food, lol.

  • In general, skipping purees and going straight to soft table foods sounds like a great idea.  But who was that woman who bragged about giving her 5 month old a sausage patty for breakfast?  Poor kid sucked all of the grease out of it, and the mom thought it was quite an accomplishment.  That was disgusting.

  • LOL. "she sucked the sausage like crazy!" Best/grossest post ever!

Ahhh, wouldn't that be awesome?  I'm not having a third kid, but if I did...bed goes on the floor, room stripped bare of everything, baby sleeps in the bed and when the little monster wakes up they can just crawl around and I can sleep.  Seriously!

  • We sort of did BLW with both kids but they were a bit older:

Ds ate some babyfood but not much relatively speaking. He let us spoon fed him sweet potatoes, applesauce, pureed pears and yogurt but that was it- never ate any other sort of baby food. He preferred simple table foods and by 8-9ish months was mostly eating things like shredded cheese, chunks of soft cooked veggies, poached pears, blueberries, little pieces of shredded chicken or even salmon, avocado, cheerios, black beans, etc.

Dd refused ALL solids until she was 11 months old. The girl had no interest in baby food or being spoon fed at all. The very idea of us trying to spoon feed her seemed to be quite offensive to her, LOL. Then one day she grabbed a green bean off of my plate and started eating it. From there on out she was totally happy eating and feeding herself. She's almost 3 y/o now and still fiercely independent- just refuses to let us do anything for her and wants to do everything herself.

You know, I had never even heard of sausage gravy until I was 19ish and in Florida on spring break.  I see people ordering it by the pitcher when I am down there....crazy.

  • It's not BABY LED anything.  That's what annoys me about these "titles!"  It is still the PARENT making the decision to skip the purees.  Baby led would mean when they were old enough to voice their opinion and actually suggest you feed them a green bean in its solid form versus a puree.

That said, Cam didn't have any purees.  But that was because she wanted to feed herself and I was NOT having a 7 month old feed herself purees with a spoon.  So I waited another 2-3 months and just gave her chunked food.  So, in that scenario, I guess it is baby led in some respects.  But to have the parent just skip all purees by THEIR OWN CHOICE is NOT baby led...it's parent led.

ARGH -- the titles drive me bonkers!

I seriously, LOLed at some of these.

Sausage girl's kid is all over these pictures. Serious question...did the recommendation for avoiding certain foods before a certain age get removed? I'm seeing really young babies with strawberries, citrus, tuna, egg whites, etc. I thought even broccoli was too gassy before 8-9 months or so.  Apparently I have some studying up to do!

  • Looking at those pics makes my stomach turn.

There's one pic of a kid clutching fries... it's labelled as his 'first food other than breastmilk'.

What kind of fvckwit thinks that FRIES are a good choice as a first solid food?

And the looks on some of the babies faces are far from happy.

  • First, I think BLW is a stupid term. Second, I did very few purees with my girls, but still followed the food guidelines. There's a good way to introduce solid food and then there's "sucking the sausage like crazy."

That is probably my favorite phrase from the Bump. DH and I often use it in everyday conversations.

Eh, I didn't really follow those guidelines either. I really think many of those recommendations are super conservative (but really, I ate lunch meat, sushi and soft cheese while pregnant too so what the hell do I know, LOL?)

I used common sense but never was really strict about things. For instance, I wouldn't give a 6 month old an entire clementine to eat- but just a small piece to try it out? Sure. I didn't worry myself about egg whites, wheat, etc. As for gassier foods it just depends on the kid I suppose. Can't hurt to try a little bit and see what happens. The worst that happens is they get a little gassy, have some temporary discomfort, and you just know to avoid it for a while longer.

Granted, both of my kids were on the older side before really eating solids so that makes a difference too IMO. Dd was nearly a year old before she would eat solids so it's not like we're talking about cramming questionable stuff down a 4 month old's throat.

And now I think it's my favorite phrase, too.  I am cracking up right now at "sucking the sausage like crazy."
