VBAC

increasing the odds?

I had a c-s with DS and really want to try for a VBAC come May.  I've read there are ways to increase the odds....is there anything that can be done 4 months out o increase the odds???  TIA!

Re: increasing the odds?

  • I really believe having a truly supportive midwife/OB is the best thing you can do, not just someone who will "allow" it.

Then a doula would be a close second, imo.  What was the reason for the first c/s?  That would make a difference in things you could possibly do to try and avoid the same situation (gain less weight, exercise, stuff like that).

  • I was told I had to have a cs b/c the dr. thought DS was going to be "big"....(more than 9 lbs) and I was told by several in the practice, after doing internal exams, that my pelvic bones were very tight.  I've since switched drs and hospitals. My current didn't say he disagreed, however,he told me if I want to try a VBAC I should...that you don't know how much your pelvis will spread until you're in labor. I just want to do everything I can now (I'm due mid-May) to increase my odds of having a successful VBAC.  (Also, I had the c-s 3 days before my due date. I wasn't dilated at all...)

  • What chicsub said. Having a provider who really is going to support you, even if you go past x weeks and x days, or aren't laboring super-fast, is the most important thing, IMO.

I think staying active is really really good, too. I was much more active during my DS2's pregnancy (besides just dealing with my toddler, I swam and rode my bike a ton), and I think it really helped during labor.. I went to a chirporactor, and though I was super-skeptical about the benefits of it when I started, I didn't get sciatica nearly as bad as I had my first pg, and it certainly didn't hurt things in the end.

Maybe think about reading "Birthing From Within", bc it has chapters about dealing with past birth experiences - it might be a good idea to get yourself pumped up mentally, also. hth

  • Red raspberry leaf tea is supposed to make contractions more effective, and you can start that any time. Some people drink it throughout the pregnancy and some (esp. if prone to early labor) wait until they're full-term. I wasn't religious about it but I did drink it when I felt like having some tea anyway.
  • Ditto the doula & truly supportive provider.  I'd also recommend trying chiropractic.  See what they say about your pelvis.  I'd find one who works with pg women and is familiar with the webster technique.  I need chiro for my neck (otherwise I get reoccurring headaches - it truly does work for me in that area) and we've been working on aligning my pelvis the entire time as well to up my chances.
