nbr: what internet do you have?

We started watching streaming netflix and hulu on our computer in the last few months after getting rid cable tv. I upgraded from AT&T dsl lite to AT&T dsl extreme but it still really hangs up when we are trying to watch. It's especially annoying, b/c it seemed really fast when we first upgraded the speed, then it slowed down and we figured it was our old laptop's fault (since my dad could plug his laptop in and it seemed to work ok) so we bought a brand new laptop. Then it was fast for like a week and it has slowed way down again! ugh

So after that long winded primer, my question is: What internet do you use, especially those who watch netflix and tv shows on your computer & do you have problems with needing to buffer a lot.

We had to buffer about every 15 min or less this weekend with a movie we were watching on netflix :(

Re: nbr: what internet do you have?

  • we use time warner.  haven't had a problem with it.  however, we don't watch it on the computer, our we have a home theater PC that we stream the online netflix through (if that makes sense, and if that makes a difference).
  • Loading the player...
  • We use TWC and never have had much trouble with it. We usually stream Netflix through the Wii or our PC connected to the TV. (we're on Turbo speed now, but used Light with the same results)

I suggest checking to make sure your internet is secured. Someone may be using your wireless and effecting the speed.

  • We have TWC and I occassionally watch things on Hulu on the laptop and have the same problems.  It has to buffer constantly.  We have whatever the "regular' speed is with them.  I don't know if it would be better if we watched on the PC instead of a wireless connection or not.  I know our internet is secured and TWC has verified that our speed is acceptable.  So I have no idea but it drives me nuts!

  • We have Century Link and we like them. We have the fasted internet they offer, I think 10mg and it is super fast and works great.

I was wondering if it could be because our wireless router is slowing down the connection, but we bypassed that yesterday and it didn't seem to help much.

We are thinking of switching to TWC since there is no installation fee right now, and the price would be about the same (for 12 months anyway) But don't like to hear that you are still having problems with TWC,since that was the sole purpose we bought our laptop- to watch tv and movies!

The wireless is definitely secured, that is one thing we finally figured out!

  • You'll find that DSL/ADSL lines are about the slowest lines still left in major markets, outside of standard modem connections and the occasional old ISDN lines. And you'll probably be surprised that you are paying about as much as you are for TWC Roadrunner. Call TWC and make sure you tell them that you would be a new customer, tell them that you have internet through AT&T today, and that its X price (I would tell them atleast 20% less than you are currently paying AT&T) and what type of service and price they can offer you. They will try to either match, beat, or atleast get you pretty close to the AT&T price. You will find a world of difference when you switch. Asymetrical Digital Subscriber lines were almost invented as a quick fix for providing high speed through the telephone lines, in order to compete with high-speed cable services. Its a wonder to me that they are still around,

  • Here in Hickory, CenturyLink has sucked since merging their companies. We got out of our contract because they couldn't provide the speed we needed. We now have Charter. As much as I hate their customer service and their prices are steeper, it's worth it. Our speed is doubled and doesn't drop out! It's been wonderful!
