How hard do you try to get stains out of LO's clothes?

DS has 3 shirts that I have gone through 3 rounds of Shout Advanced and the washer.  Although, they seem to be getting a little better each time, I am about ready to throw in the towel.  1 t-shirt I don't really care about, 1 shirt is a Gymboree polo, but it's ugly.  (didn't realize how ugly it was online, then didn't want to take the time to return it.  Stick out tongue), but the last shirt is one of my favorite outfits of DS's (although, I guess by now, he can't wear a shorts outfit anymore!).

Or do you still keep some (lightly) stained things for "outside" play clothes? (obviously, more of a question for summer stuff)

  • Not at all. I don't have time :-). Stain = trash!

  • I usually don't either.  If it's right on the front and really obvious, I'll spray it with something before it goes in the wash.  A lot of Cooper's shirts have the short sleeves with the long sleeves underneath, the long sleeves are almost always white.  And they almost all have stains on them, somehow I forget to check the sleeves and pre-treat them.   If it's an obvious stain, I'd probably just toss it.  But, he wears the shirts with some dirty spots on the cuffs and I really don't care.  He's just going to get them dirty again.  I'm a bad mom, I know.

  • I don't do anything to try and get stains out. If clothes have something like food on them, I spray them with spray'n'wash before they go in the laundry bin but nothing special. In fact I only do that about 50% of the time. Kids, especially boys, are going to get dirty and there is no way around it. I don't toss the clothes out unless its really bad. The ones with small stains, I don't save for play clothes- they're everyday clothes just like anything else. They will get dirty again and again and my kids wear them until they can't wear them anymore. It's not worth the time to spend serious effort to fight stains on toddler clothes because the stain you can't get out can just as easily happen the next time they wear it and your effort was wasted.

  • I make a good effort.  However, I don't spend a lot of time.  I'm lucky to have a big wash sink in my laundry area.  I spray the stains, dump them in the tub filled with oxyclean and let them sit for a day or 2.  If I miss a stain and notice while I'm folding, I throw it in the sink with oxyclean and give them a second shot.  About 75% of the time they come out.  I do let me kids wear things with small light stains to play in.  They grow so fast and I have a set budget for clothing.
  • I use Oxy for Babies at it works quite well.
  • I spent more time and effort on this when I had a singleton.  But as our family has grown and the girls have gotten older, I don't have the same motivation that I used to.  I agree with Bpaullo - they grow super fast and they are out of their clothes before I know it oftentimes.  I wish I had a sink in my laundry room though - it would make things much easier, especially when they're sick (vomit) or potty training (poop.)

  • I make somewhat of an effort.  Spray it with something, soak the load and then wash.  Usually I can get whatever it is out in one or 2 washes.  If it's really bad, I throw it away BUT that's only happened a handful of times and it's mainly just been bibs or burpcloths.
  • Right now I have a few "nice" shirts that Cooper wears at home from Gymboree, etc.  I make an effort to clean them pretty quickly and for now I can avoid super messy food when he's wearing them.

He's got different shirts from Kohl's that are for everyday/school wear.  I pre-treat most things but if it is a small spot, he'll still wear it.  So far the only major stain was on a LS thermal onesie and he can just use it as pjs or wear it under a sweater.  It is less of a stain and more of me washing it with something that bled...

They informed me that I should send him to school in clothes that can and will get dirty since they do a lot of crafty type things that are edible and eat with their hands.

  • I wash twice, then toss.  If it's special I'll give it to my mom to work her magic. The girls have a ton of clothes and if I don't love it then I don't stress about getting the stain out.  I've made myself crazy in the past getting stains out and with two kids I've let go of that obsession.
  • I am pretty hardcore about getting out stains.

Try OxyClean....and let it SIT on the stain overnight. That usually works.
