Telling Work...

I am 6 weeks pregnant...my office is mid-leadership transition and I intend to keep my pregnancy a secret from the office for as long as I can.

Do you think it's unreasonable or unrealistic of me to believe I have a chance of keeping it secret until after Jan. 1?  I live in a cold-weather climate so I'm hoping I can hide any potential bump with sweaters/layers.  Any insight will be helpful...TIA!

Re: Telling Work...

  • It's possible that you can hide it that long especially if you wear a lot of layers. Lots of people couldn't tell I was pregnant until well into the 2nd trimester. But everyone's bellies grow differently

  • Its definately possible - I didn't come out at work about my pregnancy until I was almost 20 weeks (I didn't really show much until then).

  • It is not unreasonable to try to keep it quiet that long ... I don't think it's unrealistic either, though your body might betray you a little earlier than that.  You'll be helped by the holidays too.  People will be out of the office a lot for those last couple of weeks.  Make that your plan and if you have to change it as the time approaches, so be it.
  • It all depends on how you carry.  With my first, I started showing at 9 weeks and got my 1st stranger comment at around 12 weeks and with my second, I started showing at around 6 weeks and got my first stranger comment a few weeks later.  Hiding with clothes might help as long as you are not dressing totally different than how you normally do.  If you drastically change your style, people will think you are hiding something.

  • I planned to wait longer to tell work but the morning (all day) sickness gave me away.  Crossing my fingers that doesn't happen to you!
  • I don't think it is unrealistic.  Just invest in some bulky sweaters and clothes that you will be comfortable in.  I told work at 14 weeks but you couldn't really tell I was pregnant until 21 weeks.
  • It's not unrealistic.  I stayed pretty small until then and even if people thought I was getting a belly, I don't think anyone would ask because it's sort of rude to say 'Hey - you are getting fat - are you pregnant?' (:  Even if they are thinking it, they will probably keep it to themselves.
  • ditto bella427 - I told earlier than I planned because of all-day morning sickness.   The other thing that would have given me away was not going out after work, or going out and not drinking.  If it was just a question of hiding the bump, I probably could've kept it a secret until 5 months.
  • It all depends on your body type.  Most people couldn't tell I was pregnant till late in my 2nd trimester.

  • Is there a particular reason that you want to keep it quiet until Jan 1st?

  • Possible depending on your body type and how your body deals with the pg.  I also had to fess up due to m/s (my boss kept noting how I looked ashen) and I popped out pretty fast but in the winter you can likely hide it for longer.  Just play it by ear.
