Wooden Dollhouse vs Calico Critters Treehouse

DD turns 3 in May, and I'm starting to think what to get her (because I'm crazy like that - I love her toys...). DH and I really want to do one "big" gift and that's it...

Was thinking of "upgrading" from her Little People dollhouse to a real dollhouse made of wood - maybe the Melissa and Doug one https://www.amazon.com/Melissa-Doug-Classic-Heirloom-Victorian/dp/B000GYSYSU/ref=sr_1_1?s=toys-and-games&ie=UTF8&qid=1294755761&sr=1-1 or the Pottery Barn one https://www.potterybarnkids.com/products/westport-dollhouse/?pkey=e%7Cdollhouse%7C9%7Cbest%7C0%7C1%7C24%7C%7C3&cm_src=PRODUCTSEARCH||NoFacet-_-NoFacet-_-NoMerchRules-_-, both of which require that you buy the furniture and figures separately.

Other thought was...she's still pretty young...maybe it's too early for a "big girl" dollhouse and lets get her the Calico Critters Treehouse (though we would have to purchase furniture separately; she has several of these figures): https://www.amazon.com/Calico-Critters-Country-Tree-House/dp/B002RBWKOO/ref=sr_1_6?s=toys-and-games&ie=UTF8&qid=1294755515&sr=1-6

What do you think? Anyone have any of these. I hate paying that kind of money for a plastic treehouse...but it looks so cute.

Re: Wooden Dollhouse vs Calico Critters Treehouse

  • We got my DD the Kidcraft Savannah dollhouse when she turned 2 and she and all her friends love it (one of them even got her own for Christmas, apparently).  It is huge, so be forewarned, but it is Barbie sized instead of 1:12 scale like the Melissa and Doug and I think DD just loves the size of it and having something very substantial to play with.  Plus, it comes with durable wooden furniture and you can get any 11 inch dolls you want (we went with Only Hearts Club dolls).  She has a Calico Critters set as a hand me down from a friend and she likes it, but it's similar in scale (only smaller) to Little People, and she just ends up with tiny pieces everywhere.  For the absurd price of those furry little beasts, I'd wait until she's pleading that every other girl at school has them and she will die without them before sinking that much money into it (don't get me wrong, they're adorable, but a lot of money for what they are).  I also love the Melissa and Doug house and have thought about it for the future, but the pieces are delicate, probably something that a 3 year old could not play with without breaking.  So my advice, check out the Kidcraft or other wooden play-scale houses (Target has a fun one with lots of furniture options), and maybe build a dollhouse together from a kit in another 5 or 6 years.

  • Thanks - I like the Kidkraft products, so I'll have to check that out! Good advice about the M/D and Calico Critters toys...
