s/o BHs & breathlessness

In a post below someone mentioned that BHs make it difficult to breathe for them. For me, for the past week or two, BHs have at times been accompanied by a feeling of breathlessness (almost like a weight on my chest). Sometimes I only notice I'm having a BH because I recognize the feeling in my chest. I thought maybe the hardening of the belly makes it difficult to take deep breaths, but I was going to ask my MW about it next week. But since someone else mentioned it, I thought I'd ask here. Does it happen to anyone else? Does anyone have an explanation?

Re: s/o BHs & breathlessness

  • I asked my MW this just last night. I get the same feeling. She said that during this stage in pregnancy there is so much more blood volume and your uterus sits so high against your diaphragm that the feeling of breathlessness is not suprising. She also mentioned that because of the change in blood volume and position of the uterus, your heart actually turns a little bit and of course is working harder. So I guess I felt a little better after her explanation. My theory before I saw her was that when your uterus is soft, your diaphragm is more flexible meaning it's easier to take each breath, then when you get a rockin hard BH, its like your diaphragm is suddenly sitting on a hard floor and cant move as easily during each breath until your BH goes away. Anatomy speaking, I think that makes a little sense too Smile

  • It happens to me all the time when I'm having a BH.  I don't really know why it happens but I don't think it's abnormal at all.

  • I have experienced this a lot too. I explained it to my OB as BHs that take my breath away. She said it's fine as long as I dont get more than 10 an hour and they don't hurt. I think that sometimes the baby is just in the right position to be blocking airflow while I have the BH at the same time.
