Have you ever been in an accident w/a car seat?

I have to switch insurance companies. I've seen people post on-line that their insurance company covered the cost of their car seat. Is that car insurance or your home insurance? The guy I just talked to with AAA said it would fall under home insurance which is subject to a deductible (likely of $250). If that's the case then it wouldn't be worth it to file a claim so I'm curious how other people have had insurance pay for their new seat.

  • I was in an accident Dec 09 with a car seat in the car and the other person's car insurance covered the replacement.  My husband also used to work as an actuary in auto insurance, and said that it is pretty standard for auto insurance companies to cover that.

  • I don't get how home insurance would cover the cost of a new car seat if you are in a car accident.  That just does not make sense to me.

When we were in an accident back in October, the lady who hit us, her car insurance paid to replace the car seat.  We could have gone through our car insurance but then we would have been subject to our deductible.  Once the investigation was over though our insurance would have gone after her insurance to get reimbursed and we would have gotten our deductible back.  It wasn't worth it to us since our deductible is $500.  We didn't have a to pay a dime since we waited for her insurance to do their thing.  I went, bought the new car seat and took them the receipt.  They cut me a check right then and there.  I also had to hand over the old car seat.

Well car seats can be considered personal property.  Any personal property that is in your car would still be covered by your homeowners insurance.  This could also apply to a laptop, clothing, etc.

I believe this can vary by state.  For example, PA is a "no fault" state so I could see how it might be covered under homeowners in that case.  Although it makes sense that the person's insurance who caused the accident would cover the cost.  I haven't gone through this personally though :::knocks on wood::: so I can't say from personal experience how it goes here.

Exactly. He said that anything not permanently attached to the car is considered personal property and our home insurance would cover it. I think the stories I've heard must all be related to the other persons insurance company covering the cost. Hopefully it is never an issue!

  • not a carseat, but this speaks to the "personal property" issue...

we were in an accident several years ago. DH and I were passengers in MIL's car and were rear-ended by a girl. My camera was in the car and the lens was dented. Her car insurance cut me a check for the new cost of the item (i had my original receipt) even though it was like 8 years old.

My insurance covered mine when I rolled my car (State Farm).  When I was t-boned, my car insurance covered it (other driver didn't have insurance, I had USAA), and when my MIL slid on black ice and hit a light pole her insurance covered Xavian's seat (Gieco).

I believe Go4's seat was covered when she rearended last year, too.

  • Our car insurance paid for both of the car seats we had to replace. Then they went after the other driver's insurance to get paid back, but the car insurance covered it. I couldn't imagine why home insurance would cover a CAR seat...that seems silly. I'd talk to someone else.
