Re: Subway Tuna???

  • My doc says 6 oz of tuna a week is a-ok.  Could I recommend Cousin's tuna instead?  I would pretty much do anything for a cousin's tuna sandwich with pickles and onions and a side of salt and vinegar chips.  ::drool::  hehe

  • here's the beef on Subway tuna---Yes it is ok to eat 6 oz. of tuna, a six incher could be ok but keep in mind that it sits on a bar aaaalllll day long with mayo in it (Full Fat mayo might I add). My midwife says if I am ever to grab something from a salad bar it should have copious amounts of ice in the underneath ice tray and I should scoop from the very bottom of the container (closest to ice and refrigeration temp). At subway- they scoop from the top and who knows if the ice is not just melted water under there?

  • I have been craving tuna like no other during this pregnancy, but have only had it twice because I'm trying to limit my intake. Once I got it from a local sub shop (like subway) and, well, I'm fine from it! Hmmm...maybe I'll have that for dinner tonight.... Smile it's so good!

I don't think the full fat mayo is going to kill anyone when they're pregnant.

I understand what your midwife says about the 'sitting on the bar' part though.

  • My family used to own Subway resturants-these "bars" are cooled with a cooler underneath-not just ice! These places are highly regulated and have to meet requirements of certain temperatures for meat/seafood/veggies. Trust me it's the first thing the health dept and the inspections from Subway themselves check when they walk in the store!

Enjoy your tuna sandwich!  Whenever I worried about what I can/can't eat I just remember babies have been born for millions of years and when is the last time you heard of someone losing a baby over an occiasional tuna sandwich? If something would truely harm your baby it would be outlawed let alone just recommended not to more then 6oz a week!

  • My doctor told me it cannot be abacore tuna, all others are ok.

  • Not to hijack the post, but is anyone still eating cooked tuna that isn't light? I'm asking because right before my BFP (yes I know, a long time ago, I need to get over it!) I had some ahi tuna and it's higher in mercury than typical canned light tuna. Some websites even say to avoid it while TTC, which I didn't know at the time. Mercury builds up and takes awhile to leave your system. Anyone know what to think about ahi tuna or other types of tuna (I actually don't like tuna and only had it that one time on a salad!) OP, as far as I know tuna from subway is just fine and safe!

  • Safe.  I've had a few 6" tuna subs from Subway since my BFP.

Subway is required (like other restaurants) to temp their stuff regularly to make sure it's staying cold (or hot) and fresh.  They're not amateurs, it's not just melted ice under there.  Plus, my Subway seems to have enough turn over around meal time that I'm confident the tuna hasn't been sitting there all day.

  • Definitely not worried about it killing anyone. However, 10 grams of unhealthy fat per tablespoon isn't good for anyone.  The high fat content is also harder on our systems, and harder to digest when our pregnant digestion is already sluggish. Just being an advocate for health. Many women complain about excessive weight gain, gas, constipation and water retention. Watching items like full fat mayo can make a difference in some (not all) of these unpleasant symptoms.
