How many newborn diapers per day?

I don't want to buy too many newborn diapers, so I'm trying to get some insight on how many newborn diapers one would go through a day.  Also how long are they normally in newborn diapers?  Can the dry max diapers irritate babies skin?

Re: How many newborn diapers per day?

  • First-time mom here, but I've asked these same questions to my already-mommy friends...

I only bought 2 small packs of newborns, because you just never know. They go up to 10 lbs, and I *hope* LO isn't a 10-lber when she's born, but who knows!! I've heard up to 10 diaper changes a day in the beginning, then it slows down a bit. I did not buy the Pampers with Dry Max for this reason. I'm sure many babies have used them just fine with no problem, but I have pretty sensitive skin myself, and didn't want to risk it with LO.

  • I still have some left over from my DS because he grew so fast and I only bought two of the little packs. But other babies are in them for 3 months or more. I say the average little one would go through 6-10 in a day. But you change a new born more than you usually change a 6mth old. Sorry, I don`t know if that helped at all. Tongue Tied

  • a lot - if you will BF you can change them like every 2/3 hours. all disposale diapers have pretty insane chemicals in them (we are going to use cloth diapers again after the first 8-10 weeks) and they can burn their skin, but also the chemicals leak into the baby's skin...

  • Somewhere between 10 and 14 diapers per day.

Totally depends on how big your baby is.  My first was 8lbs 2oz and was in NB diapers for about 2-3 weeks.  My second was 9lbs 8oz and never fit into NB diapers. =)

We used Pampers exclusively with both kids until they switched to the DryMax and I immediately noticed problems with DS's skin and he began to develop sores on his bottom.  He does not have sensitive skin otherwise, so I will stay away from those.  I think it may be the Sensitive Swaddlers that don't have DryMax?  I'm not sure.  We're going to use Target brand (which is what I use on DS when I'm not using cloth) and then switch baby to cloth after a few weeks.

  • My baby was 8-4, and the Huggies Snuggler Newborns barely fit.  They said up to 10 pounds.

I had bought a case.  I regret that.  The hospital gave us Pampers Size 1 in the hospital, and they fit much better.  We just folded down the front until her stump fell off, which happened at 10 days.  They were the non-Dry Max.  I think Baby Dry.

I would start with size 1 if I had to redo, whatever brand you get.

But she uses about 7 or 8 a day.

  • In the beginning we were going through 12-14 diapers in 24 hours.

It's hard to guess how long they will be in NB diapers, it depends on the size of the baby and how fast they are packing on weight.  I would buy a box and leave it unopened and keep the receipt in case your baby doesn't need them.  Babies r Us were a pain in the ass and actually wouldn't accept a trade-up in size with a unopened box with no receipt.  So keep that in mind...keep your receipts.

The Dry Max is issue is hit and miss it seems.  You will have some people saying their child had a reaction, others haven't had any problem with them.  I personally decided to avoid them and had luck with Pampers Baby Dry diapers which has no Dry Max in them.  Other people say that they prefer other brands so it's up to you.

  • 8-10 diapers a day as newborns

DD was almost 8 lbs at birth, she was in newborn size for quite a while... a month or so maybe?

I have no idea about the Dry Max thing - she was out of diapers before that made news, so I don't know how those are. I did love Pampers Swaddlers with her as a newborn though.

  • Just to add on to what everyone else has been saying - definitely buy the NB diapers as you go - dont buy a big box. It definitely depends on each LO. DS was not a large baby at all, but happened to have these monster thighs that made him move up a size in diapers :) So even if you have an LO that doesn't weigh a lot, the way they are proportioned makes a huge difference in how the diapers fit them - its really impossible to go by the weight guidelines on the diaper package. We typically used about 10 diapers a day during the NB stage.

  • Dh and I bought a huge box of Pampers Swaddlers Dry Max a few months ago (they were on sale at Walmart, only $25.00 for 219 diapers!) but then I started hearing about the issues that some people were having with severe rashes. I tend to have sensitive skin and just don't want to risk it affecting LO like it has with others. We are back to the drawing board with what type of dipes to get.

  • I would just buy 1 large pack (not case) of NB, the NB and the size ones have overlapping weights. You may or may not need more but don't stock up on one size because you might have ALOT left over.

If you want, you could use the money you would spend on a case of diapers and load up a gift card. If money is tight you always have that to fall back on, or if you have to send someone else for diapers you dont have to have the cash to give them.

  • I am planning to get enough of a supply to get me through 3-5 days.  (So probably 40-50 diapers.)  I anticipate we'll need something from the store in that time period, so DH or my parents will be able to pick up more when needed.  I just don't want to have too many leftover newborn diapers if DD grows as fast as her older brother did!  (DS was 9.5 lbs by 2 weeks.)

DS just got over a horrible rash that we think are related to him wearing Pampers, so we're going to get Huggies for DD.  I don't plan to get the sensitive kind unless it seems DD needs them.

  • 10+ a day. DS was 7lbs 7oz when he was born, and he was able to wear them for about 2 months. I plan to buy one package of NB, a small one, not a case, and I will go out and get more if we need them. Some family members have asked what size diapers I want, and I say 1s or 2s, since who knows if LO will even fit into NB. But I do plan to have some on hand.

  • I was cautious about this too. It my newborn care classes they said average was 10. Anyway I bout Costco brand. Very inexpensive. I also bought luvs it was what my mom used with me and she never had issues. Luvs goes from 8-14lbs and I believe the Costco brand does as well.
  • We're expecting a small baby (7lbs or less) so I got enough NBs to last 2 weeks. I kept the receipt so I can swap some for a bigger size if necessary.

  • I bought 2 packages of nb diapers because I didn't know how big he was going to be. He was 6 lbs 12 oz when he was born so they fit well and they'll fit for awhile. He's a massive poop machine though. I'm on my third pack of diapers and he turns 2 weeks tomorrow! I would suggest holding off a little though. Baby boy reacts terribly and breaks out in an awful rash with huggies... He does best with pampers swaddlers. You don't want to buy tons of diapers that you're going to have to switch out later.

  • There is no uniform answer to this. My daughter was in NB size for two months. My son was in size 1 after a month. Wait to buy your diapers IMHO

  • I have 7 pound babies. They are usually in nb until 8 weeks or up to 12.

They also poop almost every time they eat and pee more.. So my guess is 8-12 diapers a day. It is a lot and when I was a FTM I probably changed too soon.

Pampers or huggies has a yellow line that turns green or blue when wet. That helped me a lot. I would say I went through one box and 2 bags.

We were in ones forever but my kids are little to start.
  • For us we went through about 15 a day and my son wore the NB size for ab 3.5 months... So thats a lot of diapers, i have ab 600 right now and if this baby is bigger or grows faster i can exchange them for other sizes... We also have a stock pile of 1, 2, and 3.... So i think we should be good...

Started TTC in 2006, LOTS of trying, and trying, and 7 rounds of IVF with 13 embryos, 2 perfect little boys and 5 loses....
All finished with babies, started to make diet changes, Keto, to be MORE for my kids, lost 30 pounds, still going, and 3 months in, I had a natural cycle, and then ovulated... Hubs and I are going to see what happens now... Maybe a natural pregnancy? After everything we have been through? Or just a return to normal hormones? We shall see what the future holds!

  • I'm the same I have about 3-400 nappies sizes 1 and 2, mostly 2 as this baby is already measuring big, I can't remember how many nappies I used first time around, I've picked most these up with coupons or special offers :)
  • Ds was never in nb diapers and he was 8lbs, 6oz. They never fit right and he always leaked. Dd was in them for a few weeks at 6lbs, 10oz.

  • We bought one pack of NB and one pack of Size 1.  I figure I can always send my husband out to buy more diapers :-)

  • Seems like we used 10-12 diapers per day on DS when he was tiny. I doubt we used more than 150 NB diapers in all since he was pretty big (9 lb 7 oz) and was only in NB size for about 2 weeks.

He did fine in Pampers Swaddlers with DryMax. No diaper brand, even the heavily scented ones, has ever caused him irritation, even though he has very sensitive skin. Probably because we always kept his skin liberally coated with petroleum jelly.

  • For sure you don't want to invest too heavily in the NB diapers.  If anything, stock up on ths bigger sizes when they go on sale.  No matter how big Baby is, s/he won't be in them long.  Expect anywhere from 8- 12 diaper changes a day, depending on feeding, sleeping, etc.

We used a few different brands but the ones I found worked best with our first daughter were the Pampers Swaddlers.  I always had leaks with any Huggies brands. Or up- the- backers. :P

  • To answer your question about irritation on the baby's skin, you won't know until you try whichever brand you choose. With DS we had to try almost every brand to figure out that pampers swaddlers is the ONLY brand that did not irritate his skin.
