Alternating Motrin and Tylenol

What are the rules on doing this? Thanks!

Re: Alternating Motrin and Tylenol

  • I had the 8 hour Motrin and Tylenol so the nurse told me to alternate them every 4 hours until the fever broke. If it is the regular then I think it is every 3 hours.

  • Infant Motrin typically lasts 6-8 hours so most practices will say to alternate every 3-4 hours.

That being said, my pedi does not recommend alternating unless the fever is extremely high and the Motrin alone is not keeping it under control and he is miserable. Fever helps them to fight off infections so it's not always a bad thing.

I don't remember the allowable fever when he was 6 months, but at age 2.5 as long as the Motrin keeps it to 101.5 or maybe even 102....I don't bother with the Tylenol unless he is miserable between doses. Tylenol does little to nothing for most of his fevers.

I'd call your pedi office to see what they recommend for her age.

  • We were told to alternate motrin every 6 hours and tylenol every 4 and to continue doing that even if the doses were at the same time.

  • I've done this with drs orders. Childrens motrin and tylenol can be alternated for up to 24 hours every 4-5 hours. It usually knocks out whatever DS has. Hope it helps
  • I'm late, but we've always alternated every 3 hours (Motrin is every 6 hrs, Tylenol is every 4, so this covers you), in the event of a high fever. I hope Arden's feeling better!
