DS woke up this morning very very unhappy. I changed his diaper and found that his rash/blister/whatever had gotten worse. The larger sore has been there on and off for 3 weeks and was seen by his allergist on Thursday. The other blisters and sores are new since last night. Also the tip of his penis had a blister that was getting better but now it is back in full force. The skin is swollen and cracked/bleeding. We gave him a bath, put A&D ointment on it and stuck him in a sposie (which stinks b/c he has allergies to them).
On Thursday the allergist said it is NOT yeast and it's NOT an allergy. She doesn't know what it is and got him an appt with a pedi dermatologist for the 20th.
Also I have stripped the diapers (although I'm about to do it again). I change him every couple hours at most, and immediatly after he poops.
I called the allergist and left a message but I think they are closed b/c of the ice/snow storm. They have a number for the on-call doctor. Should I call the on-call doctor or take him to children's (our pedi is also closed). DH wants to wait and see how it looks tomorrow.
Here are two pictures if anyone has any insight:
UPDATE: I have called the dermatologist (who is also closed) and left a voicemail for their oncall nurse/doctor. I'm hoping they will see us sooner rather than later. I'm about to call Children's Hospital and see how busy they are (with the weather I'm thinking they may be packed). If they are slammed I'll plan to take him in the morning there, I'm skipping my pedi altogether b/c she's not helpful and I'm planning to switch anyway.
We are currently changing his diaper every 45 minutes and giving him 15 minutes of naked time. He hasn't pooped yet today or I'd let him go longer
I'll let you know what the doctors say, if they call me back.
Re: Update: Would you call (pedi allergist or children's) PIP
this is exactly what I was thinking. after working at a hospital, on a floor that dealt a LOT with staph, it looks a lot like it.
Personally, unless you can see the dermatologist, I'd wait - just as I don't know if they'd come up with much more than you already know. Have they tried to figure out if it's a bacterial infection?
I'd take everything off him - DS gets some sores at some point, and that is the best way to get rid of everything. We also put neosporin on anything that looks worse than minor and then diaper rash cream on top of that if he does need a diaper. I'd take him out of the sposies if he is allergic to them (I'd worry that would just further irritate it) - naked time if you can (spread some blankets) and then I'd stick some new fleece liners in all of his diapers when you do need them.
Poor baby & mama!
Poor baby!
If you can I'd just leave him naked as much as possible until the derm appointment. If it's bothering him a lot more than usual then I'd call someone.
Miles (6 year old Maine C00n mix), Boots (5 year old Lab mix), Darla (4 year old GSD/Collie mix), Frankie (1.5 year old DSH mix), Peanut (15 months old - 09/11), and Bean (arriving Feb 2013).
I would call the on call dr. see what they say, otherwise I would be going to children's. I think he need to be seen. It doesn't look good and the poor little guy need to get it cleared up. I can ask DH to look at this pics when he gets home. However that will not be until 5pm.
Hope he feels better soon.
Poor baby! I agree that I would give him plenty of naked time with an anti-bacterial ointment. It does look like it could be a staph infection. Does he have a fever at all? I would just watch out if he gets too cranky, because if it is a bacterial infection they can get really nasty really fast.
Good luck!
Man. That's tough. On one side I'd have trouble looking at that and not taking him to the doctor. On the other side you've been to the doctor without results and the main blister has been there for quite a while.
Can you call the pediatric derm and tell them the situation? Maybe they could squeeze you in somewhere if you let them know the severity of the situation. It kind of looks like staph actually. I had it on my leg once and that's exactly what happened - especially the big hole / blister majigger.
