Trouble TTC

Intro and thrombophilia

Hello, I'm just introducing myself over here since I am about to start cycle 8 of TTC.  I normally post on TTGP, so you may or may not recognize me from there, but I don't post too frequently.  I wouldn't normally post on this board so early, but I finally broke down and told my sister we have been TTC and she wanted to fill me in on her medical history.  She has had a lot of fertility challenges and testing over the years, including pre-eclampsia with her first child, three miscarriages (one at the end of first tri), Clomid, HSG, multiple rounds of IUI, and just taking a long time to get pregnant in general.  She is now pregnant with her fourth, but apparently this pregnancy happened easily and is going well.

Anyway, she also told me she was diagnosed with thrombophilia, a condition I'm not really familiar with.  She has the A1298C mutation of one allele at the MTHFR locus-she is heterozygous.  I'm not jumping the gun and assuming that I will also have this condition, but I just wanted to learn more about it and hear other people's experiences.  My annual is due next month, and while we will not have hit the 1-year mark yet, I will bring up these issues with my doc and see what she says.  I know it is generally frowned upon to start testing prior to one year, so do you think it would be too early to get blood work done based on my family history?  I am 32, by the way.  I have been charting for a long time and have very "textbook" cycles, so I know I ovulate every month.  So, thanks for reading!

Re: Intro and thrombophilia

  • Honestly I don't think you should wait the year. Get it done now. I waited a year from age 29-30 to get our fertility testing done and now I wish I had that year back. We did eventually get pg with clomid, hcg, iui. We have male factor and pcos. I let my dh and the general 1 year rule decide for me. Dumb. I could have stopped so much suffering hypothetically. Just my opinion!
