Babies: 6 - 9 Months

If your DC wouldn't take a bottle...

How did you eventually get them to take it? We have tried multiple bottles and nipples, breastmilk and formula, different people offering it, in our home as well as other places, have tried going right to a sippy cup...etc. I feel like we have tried everything!! I go back to work in 1.5 weeks and don't know what else to try! DS will be 7 months on Tuesday. He took a bottle up until 4 months, but not since then. So, if you were in a similar situation, what was your big "breakthrough?" Thanks!!

  • She never took the bottle but she does take the sippy now. We started her with water in the sippy until she got the idea and then put milk in it. She does well with it now but it took a lot of practice!

  • DS only takes a bottle when we're not there (i.e. at daycare) and will only take a medium flow, latex nipple with a medela shape to it.  We can't be in the room or he won't take it.

So it's possible that your caretaker will be able to give your LO a bottle.

  • Our DD also doesn't take a bottle, but will take a sippy cup.  Try offering it between meals when she isn't hungry and is more likely to get frustrated because she isn't getting what she wants.  I would give her the sippy cup with a little water to play with right after solid foods.  Took her about a week to figure it out!
  • i went back to work PT when DD was 4 months old.  we had "practiced" taking a bottle but she would scream and turn away from it.  it was heartbreaking!  we tried 7 different bottles, a sippy cup and a regular cup.  we use the take & toss sippy cups since they sort of drip into her mouth and then she'll start sucking.

it took 6 weeks of me being back at work for her to take a bottle.  she would just refuse it and then breastfeed when i got home.  at 4 months old she was waiting 10+ hours until i got back and then breastfeeding all night to make up for missed feedings.  like i said, it took 6 weeks, but she finally got the hang of it.  GL!

  • It took exactly 6 days of 8 hr days at daycare to take the bottle and about a month to take it regularly w/o a fight. Tommie tippie was the bottle that worked for us and she likes it warmed really hot. Is LO on solids? If so, have them feed, so LO is getting something. Good luck!
  • Have you tried a straw cup?  My DD never accepted a bottle and didn't do too well with a sippy but when I introduced a straw cup she took right to it!  I started with a 12 month + straw cup because they're easier to suck liquid through than the straw cups for younger babies.  Worth a shot right?

  • He drinks out of cups, or plastic water bottles. Straws work sometimes too.
