3rd Trimester

Getting my tubes tied

So after much consideration Dh and I have decided that we were both going to get "fixed" after Ryry is born. My dr gave me two options 1 i can have the procedure a few hours after delivery, or 2 i could come back in a couple of months and have an outpatient procedure. I plan on doing it right after I have Ryry that way I can recover at the hospital plus DH is taking a week vacation when I have him so he can help out with all 3 kids. And the dr said it only takes about a week to recover. But I plan on having a natural birth and dr was saying that they would have to use an epidural for the procedure bc they don't knock you out any more. And they really don't want to put me under since I plan to breastfeed. I was kinda bummed at this bc I was hoping not to have to mess with an eppi. if i choose to go back and get it done I would have to get a sitter for the kids and I won't have DH's help as much bc he won't be able to take off for a whole week he can only take off the day of the procedure (however if i have it done on a thursday he won't have to go back to work until monday bc they work 4 10hr days a week) and if he does that his check is going to be short. (he gets paid vacation). Any ideas on what I should do. ( We have given this a lot of consideration I have had IUD's in the past but my body rejects them so as far as long term b.c. that is not a possibility, also we always just planned on having only 3 kids)

Re: Getting my tubes tied

  • I guess I'd do it right away, but I have a question.  Have you considered a vasectomy for your DH?  I understand it's much easier to recover from and way less invasive.  It seems like the obvious choice.

  • That's a tough one. Personally I would take the epi and get the procedure done and have all the healing take place at one time. For me it's just a question of efficiency and reducing the number of hospital visits and recovery days I would have. GL with your decision.

  • I'm having it done right away.  I ended up with an epidural with DS1 (had back labor) and can see having one again.  I think DH is going to get a vasectomy later this year as well.  What my OB did tell me is that both procedures are equally effective, the difference being that the tubal is immediately effective while with the vasectomy several months are required to ensure the sperm count goes to zero.

  • I'd probably get it done right away.

It is funny, but it seems like our parents generation did it right away after they knew they were done with kids (like right away after birth) and my doctor hasn't even approached me on the subject.

Did you read her post!?!??!  They are BOTH getting sterilization procedures done.

I don't see why they couldn't give you a spinal later AFTER the birth can you ask them about that option if you don't need it during the labor?

  • I would just do it right away. I asked about having oine done right away and they said tha they don;t do it that way in our hospital. I was bummed because I would rather just get it all done at once.

Yeah, kind of curious why you BOTH need to get procedures done.

  • I'm getting my tubes tied too and my doctor also gave me the option of coming back later to have the procedure done as an outpatient procedure (essure).  She told me that essure is done through the cervix so there is pretty much no recovery time needed.  I'm going to go ahead and have it done when I have the baby because I have to have a c-section so I'll already be opened up but if I were able to have the baby naturally I would definitely opt for the outpatient procedure.  I don't know a lot about essure but I'm sure your doctor can tell you more about it.

  • My Dr. won't do it right after birth unless you have a section.

  • As to why we are both getting it done, DH and I want to make sure there is no room for error. I have a couple of friends who had the procedure done and a few years later got pregnant...I don't know how well I could handle that surprise...we are just really paranoid...better safe than sorry
