Babies: 6 - 9 Months

on the verge of giving up bf

I need some motivation to keep going... I am still at home on leave and I love nursing but I feel exhausted and ,aybe formula would be easier?

Re: on the verge of giving up bf

  • Think of how much trouble it is to get your LO ready to go somewhere with all the stuff they need.  Now think about what a PITA it would be to add bottles and formula to that mix.  Boobs are so much more...portable.

    Plus, formula is expensive.

  • Don't give up! My son still wakes up a few times a night and I'm working full time and in grad school full time! I'm exhausted but I feel like the end is so in sight and that I would regret giving up. You could always try one bottle in the evening and pump and store that session...just don't quit during a bad day, maybe just do a supplemental feeding first.

  • I say save the extra $25 dollars a week and do something for yourself.  If you stop now and wean to milk at 1 year, you could save $400 or more by continuing to BF.  Trust me, I have thought this over and over again about how great it would be not to be EPing, but the money factor has me squeezing every ounce out as possible.   I have been supplimenting 1 formula bottle a day...maybe try that and see how your LO reacts.

Plus I love love love Mrs. Aunt Flo not coming for her monthly visits!  That keeps me motivated also!

  • I'm so tired I could cry but everytime DD smuggles in and smiles as she guzzled it's worth it! Ditto pp, it's portable you don't have to stop to fix bottles and you'll save soooo much money! You can do it!

  • I was in the same position last week.  I was on the verge of a breakdown.  I work fulltime and EBF for the first 6 months - I was initially thinking I would go a year But...  I've been sick, LO hasn't been sleeping, my freezer stash is gone and I was feeling enormous pressure around Breastfeeding and pumping at work.  I finally (after A LOT of thinking ) decided to give LO some formula - and the relief I feel is enormous.  I am still breastfeeding and still pumping at work, but just having that feeling that it's OK to give her a bottle of formula is a freeing feeling.
  • Take it from me. I could only BF for 2 weeks. Every time I go to mix a bottle, I become very upset and only wish I could continue to BF. Formula is expensive. And I have to think you would regret it. I only wish I could have that experience. Best of luck whatever you decide.
  • you're more than 1/2 to a year!! you can do it!

  • Just think about how much your LO needs that extra immunity boost through the winter months/cold & flu season.  You are past the 1/2 way mark to a year mama!  You can do it.

  • Thanks ladies... I actually majored in nutrition so I know how great it is for both me and LO to nurse.   LO struggled to gain weight and I fought to keep nursing instead of switching to formula.  I have always added in a little fit of formula when I felt LO needed it.  I initially planned on nursing to 6 months and then I thought why not continue.   I definately love not having AF, and I know it is way cheaper.  But sometimes I feel like LO uses me as a pacifier, which is okay sometimes and other times it is exhausting.
  • I BF DD first thing in the morning and then at bedtime and her 1 or 2 night feedings. She now gets 3 bottles of formula during the day. I don't feel bad at all. We are all happier and less stressed and tired. As to the comments about cost, i go through a little under a canister every 2 weeks so that's about $20 a month with coupons. For me it's worth the cost. It's a very personal decision, don't feel bad about whatever you do. Do what's best for you and baby.
