Hi Ladies, I wanted to ask a question for those who have or had speech theropy for their LO. What exactly do they do, like when you go, what do they do with your LO? What do they do to get them to start saying words?
you might get more responses from the special needs board, if you haven't already cross posted. I mentioned to Peyton's OT today that I was concerned about her speech. She really doesn't say anything...except "mommommom" and it's usually when she's upset and wants me. Not in any other context. She was slightly delayed in starting any type of bable and completely non-verbal for a long time. They said that was normal, she was focusing on her motor skills so her speech got the back burner.
I'm not sure how they 'make' them talk but the OT did mention something about trying to get her to immitate sounds. Peyton does point to alot of things, and she mimics activties we do (trys to eat with fork, trys to brush hair, etc).
We start outpatient PT next month & i'm going to ask them about it as well.
Thanks, I didnt even know there was a special needs board. I will ask there too. lucas goes for this 15 mth well visit tomorrow and Im mentioning it to his pedi. He doesnt say a single word. I was saying da for dog but he doesnt really say that anymore. I just worry and think its me not him.
Sometimes it is thought that little boys verbal development will take a backseat to their gross motor development when they start to walk and it takes some time to get back up to speed. For example, he may have had one or two words that he used and then when he started walking he seemed to forget them. If you are concerned then you should definitely talk to your Pedi about it, they will probably ask some other questions about his social skills, or any little quirks or repetitive play that he may do...Chances are at 15 months they will not suggest speech evals (at least in my instance they did not) but definitely by 18 months they will want to have him evaluated. I am waiting right now until febuary to get my son in for his speech and development evaluations. We also have called early intervention (Help me Grow), so that if it is necessary to have some therapy and our insurance doesnt cover everything we can get some help. Hope everything works out for you!!! GL.
