It's a... & how my amnio went

On Friday I had an amnio done and it was pretty awkward. I'm not sure if it was the whole big needle thing or wondering if my baby was going to get poked.

 Anyway....

The technician began by scanning the baby to see how everything was developing. She told me that she wouldn't be able to determine the sex of the baby because I wasn't too far along (15 weeks & 4 days). She commented on how nice the hands were and said the baby was growing nicely....

She continues scanning and she's like "gee this baby has no shame!" My fianc? and I laugh, this baby is laying with it's legs WIDE open and then I gasp... "is that a penis?!" She said "Oh my goodness! yes!" I'm having a baby boy!

On to my amnio, the doctor inserted the needle and it actually didn't hurt too bad. Removing the needle was the most painful part. My little guy is a daredevil... he kept trying to touch the needle. I started to worry that the doctor wouldn't remove the needle before curiosity got the best of him... I mean, I know he(the baby) can't see, but still...

This afternoon I received my FISH results and so far the baby came back fine for Trisomy 18,13, and 21. Yay! I'm just waiting on the complete results to celebrate...

I'm so excited! And last week the baby really started to kick... more than just' than just that popcorn feeling... like... it's kicking!

  • I'm so happy to hear that everything went well.  I have to decide whether to do an amnio or not right now and we're not sure what to do.  What did your Dr tell you in regards to the possibility of something going wrong because of the amnio? Dhe she (or he) say anything about that stuff?

  • Congrats on the amnio being over, and on the little boy!  I am really glad you posted this because my amnio is this Friday, and my nerves are already frayed worrying.   It was nice to read how your experience went--now I don't feel like I am going in there blind on Friday.

Cvl...my OB told us today that the high-risk OB doing my amnio on Friday is the best in the region.  His miscarriage rate is 1 in 700, and that other than the 3 days of bed rest he is putting me on, he has no concerns or worries.  That made us feel a lot better, although we won't breathe until it's all over and done with.  He did reiterate that there is a risk, however, he said that he thinks the benefit, in our case, outweigh the risk.  Good luck with your decision--and sorry for the thread highjack!

Thank you! I was rooting for a girl but I figure as long as my child is healthy, I don't care what sex it is.

Where I went they said the chance of miscarriage was 1/500. I'm not sure how accurate the statistic is, but that's what they quoted. I decided to go with an amnio instead of a CVS  because of the accuracy of it's test. In addition, the miscarriage rates were much lower than a CVS. They did mention there was a risk of infection at the puncture site, as well as a risk of puncture to the baby... I trusted the doctor that did the procedure and the technician that guided him was amazing.

I don't want to tell you to do an amnio, but it did provide me with peace of mind. Did the doctor give you any reason for why you should have an amnio done? My sons nuchal fold was larger than the recommended size which is why they suggested I have an amnio done.

     Hope that helps!

Hijack away! I was placed on 24hrs bed rest but gave myself an extra day just to be safe. :) You will be just fine. My future MIL was such a great help, she went through this before with her daughter who is now 21.

I'll admit, the procedure is scary, especially when they read you the risks and precautions. Just think positive and focus on that. Watching the procedure isn't all that comforting either but I had to remind myself that if my blood pressure went up, li'l one would act up too. I was too curious so I had to look :). Just keep calm. After the procedure was done, I must have looked worried because the tech asked if I was alright and I said yes. She then rescanned the baby and let me listen to the heart beat. I really appreciated that gesture.
