VBAC

Forcing it...

I'm newly pregnant with #2, and I had all high hopes of a completely natural birth with DS1.  That went to hell quickly when my body made absolutely no changes at 41w3 days my doc wanted to induce.  I am so vehemently against induction and both of my mom's births went the same way only to end up in general anesthesia c/s's.

So, I opted to go straight for c/s.  My OB also suspected macrosomia - as in 11 lbs or more.  Well, it turns out that it was polyhydramnios, not a large baby.

Anyways, do I just ride it out until the bitter end, and do as much research and prepare myself to go either way?  Should I just sit on it and make the decision last minute based on my body again?  More than anything, my philosophy is to avoid forcing my body to do something that either it isn't prepared to do or isn't capable of doing.

To be perfectly honest, my c/s was heavenly.  My recovery was a breeze, I was able to stop taking my pain meds completely about 4 days after discharge.  But, there is also part of me, as a woman, that wants to experience vaginal delivery.

Re: Forcing it...

  • It's such a personal decision.  If you have a desire to possibly have a vaginal delivery, I'd go ahead and research and prepare.

    Good luck with your decision!

  • Well I would definitely do as much research as you can and be prepared to go either way, yes.  The more research I do, the more I'm convinced that a VBAC should be treated no different than any other woman who wants to attempt natural labor.  And this means surrounding yourself with a positive support system whether it's a midwife, doula or less likely but sometimes happens, a really supportive OB.

If you are worried about not going into labor on your own, look into ways you can help prepare your body.  The ladies on this board really know their stuff and are very helpful!

  • I say you research both and prepare for either.  I didn't take the pain meds after 4 days from my CS but mostly because I ended up in the ER because I had an allergic reaction to them;-)  But one of the kickers for me is that I wouldn't be able to pick-up my first born for 6 weeks after a CS.  That and I am really against unecessary surgery.

But I will say that recovery from a vaginal birth is SO easy compared to a CS.  I didn't need pain meds at all!  Good luck with whatever you decide!

  • What I did is basically the same thing I did as a first-timer: work off the assumption that vaginal birth is preferred, but cesarean is available if necessary. I focused on VBAC, but understood c/s was possible and was also prepared for that. Find out what your personal line is? what circumstances you'd be in where you would opt for a c/s and when you would not, and talk to your OB to see if it matches, or if he/she is at least willing to honor it. I think the major issue is making sure you're clear on this in your own head and that your care provider is on the same page. For me, the c/s itself was fine, but I had a horrible labor experience with Bean, and needed to know I could decide to move to c/s if it looked like the same thing would happen again.
